Diamond Dogs Starting To Come
Together; Near .500 in SAC-8

The Diamond Dogs continued theirl
good play against conference opponents!
over the weekend. Gardner-Webb wasl
paired against the Bears of Lenoir-Rhynel
College. Led by the excellent managing of|
Clyde Miller, the Dogs stood at a surprising!
seven wins and eighteen losses after the|
weekend’s action.
During the first game of Saturday’s!
doubleheader at the Dogs home field, the!
Bears showed impressive firepower ini
defeating Gardner-Webb 8-5 in the seven]
inning contest.
What seemed to be a different Bulldog I
squad showed up for the second game.
Consistently excellent pitching stymied the
Bear batter, allowing them only one run.
On the strength of rightfielder Williel
Gilliard’s sixth homerun of the season, the|
Dogs powered on to an easy 4-1 victory.
The two teams squared off again Sunday |
afternoon in the Bears’ lair in Hickory.
After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, thel
Bulldogs gave up five runs to the angry I
Bears in the bottom half of the sixth inning. I
Not shaken, Gilliard put the Bulldogsl
ahead to stay permanently with his seventh!
homer, a two-shot blast in the top half of the I
seventh inning. Bulldog pitching held off!
the Bears for the remainder of the nine]
inning contest.
Now standing a 5-6 in the district and 5-7|
in the conference, the Diamond Dogs are I
surprising fans and experts throughout the!
Carolinas. Though they probably will not I
challenge for the league title this year, thel
Gardner-Webb baseball program is build-1
ing a strong foundation that next year will I
be hard to beat. Come out this season and I
support the team of the future.
Softball Update;
Payne Honored
By Christy Mento
Staff Writer
Congratulations to GWC Lady Bulldog
softball player Cindy Payne who has been
honored as Player of the Week for District
26. This award is based on performance on
the field during a week of play.
Midway through their season, the
Gardner-Webb College Lady Bulldogs
softball team continues to have success on
the diamond. Recently, the Lady Bulldogs
played a doubleheader against a feisty
Lenior-Rhyne squad. After a rough start,
losing the first game, the Lady Bulldogs
pulled it all together and took the second
game, 6-1.
The softball t^m is a member of the
all-sports SAC-8, which consists of GWC,
Lenior-Rhyne, Presbyterian, Wingate, Car-
son-Newman, Elon, Catawba, and Mars
Hill. As one can imagine, this makes for a
very tough season, as many of these schools
field fine teams.
If you want something exciting and fun
to do, come out and watch the Lady
I Bulldogs’ softball team take to the diamond
to win one for the Webb.
Men’s Tennis Serves
Up Wins

The Runnin’ Bulldog tennis team is off
to a great start in the spring half of their
1989-90 season. Led by the strong playing
I of number one seed Oscar Blacutt and
number two Per Albertsson, the team is 6-6
overall with a 1-2 conference mark. The
Bulldogs were impressive in wins over
NCAA Division II North Carolina A & T
and a surprising 6-3 victory over Wake
I Forest.
Blacutt and Albertsson, who are joined
Ion the team by Alfredo Bellido, Jeremy
Webb, John Keeter, Jimmy Nguyen, David
Ijones, Craig Meglii, and Todd Davis.
I Blacutt is 12-0 on the season and has not
lost a singles match to a four-year school in
his two years at Gardner-Webb. A high
point in his collegiate career occurred over
spring break of this year when he defeated
I Padeep Roman of Armstrong State, the
I number two ranked player in all of NCAA
Division II. Albertsson has also performed
impressively, posting a 10-2 singles mark.
When paired with Blacutt, he is undefeated
I in doubles.
Coach Bill Naylor is pleased with the
team’s effort and stresses the fine play of
Blacutt and Albertsson, as well as freshman
David Jones. Jones, who did not play high
school tennis,has posted a remarkable 4-1
record. With Keeter, the only senior on the
team, and all others returning plus possibly
a few recruits, the Bulldog tennis team has
high hopes for the future.
