The Pilot, page 2 From Your Editor By Dawn E. Camp Managing Editor Well, another year has started here at GWC. We all have to face new teachers (or new students) and get back into the routine of studying. But the new school year doesn’t have to be depressing. All of us- from freshmen to faculty-have a chance to start from scratch. We here at The Pilot are excited about this new year, and I’d like to tell about this year’s campus newspaper. The Pilot is just that--a campus newspaper. The paper is intended to rep resent all of Gardner-Webb College not just one or two departments or one or two people. I’d like you to realize that our staff is small. We can’t reach every club or or ganization on campus. We need you-stu- dents, faculty, and administrators-to tell us about things that are happening. I am looking forward to seeing The Pilot staff grow, and I am looking forward to seeing our service to Gardner-Webb grow. We are not here to sell our opinions, but to offer you a forum to express your own. Letters to the editor are always welcome and may be sent to me at Campus Box 120, given to any staff member or to Dr. Bill Stowe. Let us know what you think about things on YOUR campus. This is not MY paper nor is it The Pilot staffs paper. It is Gardner-Webb’s paper! It’s success or failure depends on each of you. Work wdth me and my staff to make this Gardner-Webb’s best year ever! Bowl 1 Game, Get 1 Game Free Limited to 3 Free Games Does not include shoe rental. As I See It Special to The Pilot The following scenario was provided by Chief Campus Security Officer David Hel ton, who warns, "Don’t let it happen to you. Know who your friends are. Say, no...It’s the only way to go." When I first arrived on campus, 6 weeks ago, it seemed like such a dull and unexcit ing place. I really didn’t have any fun, no friends to speak of, nowhere to go, nothing to do, can’t go through four years of this place... After a couple of weeks of boredom, I finally met some really cool people at an off campus party...we played some good music...smoked a little grass...and just chilled out... Hey, college was looking a lot better, and I was only missing my 8 o’clock class every now and then...lots of friends...par- ties...well, sometimes it’s hard to get up for my 9 and 10 o’clock classes, too. But I’m not too far behind... I brought some killer grass from home last weekend...everybody thought it was the greatest...they all want me to bring some back every week...You can’t really say I’m a drug dealer ’cause I only sell to my close friends... Big party tonight...everyone will be there...that must be some of my friends knocking on the door...the police? You’ve got a felony warrant for what? I’m under arrest...for selling marijuana...hand- cuffs...I’m not a criminal...You’re taking me where? To the magistrate’s office...jail... What did the magistrate mean, $1,000.00 bail bond...Why’s everyone staring at me? The elevator goes where? To the third floor? Empty my pockets...Take off my jewel- ry...assume what position? No, I’m, not hiding any drugs there...hey, why are those guys staring at me like that...what did he say? I can make a telephone call...Sure, let me call one of my friends, they’ll come get me out...Hello, John, I’ve been arrested. Can you get everyone together and bail me out? John...John, hello. HELLO! As your president, I look forward to addressing you in each issue. A lot of changes have been going on here at Gardner-Webb; the Dover Campus Center renovations, our new Dean of Stu dent Development, the new registrar, a new Activities/Intramurals director, etc...When changes take place, we as students have a chance to make them either positive or negative, or we may choose just to sit back and watch new things happen. Along with Dean Jerome Scott, the SGA Executive Branch wants to hear the student’s opinions and ideas. Please feel free to come by the SGA offices (located in the Reception Center) or talk with us when ever you see us. The 1990-91 SGA Execu tive Officers are as follows: president, Johnny McDaniel; vice-president, Michelle Philemon; secretary, Jill Gal loway; treasurer, Robin Freeman. Our main goal this year is to finish the revision of the constitution, so that we as an association can be more organized and ef fective. Our other objectives include more open house, improvements of election pro cedures, and building more school unity. Allow me to quote a poem by an unknown author entitled "Isn’t It Strange?" Isn’t it strange how princes and kings and clowns that caper in sawdust rings. And ordinary people like you and like me are the builders of eternity? To each is given a bag of tools, a shapeless mass, a book of rules, That each should build, ere life has flown, a stumbling block or stepping stone. I encourage you to make your place at Gardner-Webb by being a stepping stone. As individuals, we have the God-given tools to do almost anything we set our minds to. As president, I wish you the best for this year and the years to come. I look forward to meeting each of you and to seeing you help make Gardner-Webb the best it can be.
