The PUot, page 5 SPORTS Runnin’ Bulldogs Soccer Under Way By Marty White Sports Editor Armed with possibly the most potent group of players to collectively don Runnin’ Bulldogs soccer uniforms, head coach Tony Setzer is well on his way to the best soccer season is school history. The team opened the season on August 28 with a disappoint ing 3-2 overtime loss to neighboring Limes tone College. They bounced back quickly, however, domination both sides of the ball in a 5-0" trounce of Pfeiffer College in the opening round of the GWC Kick-off Clas sic. On the second day of the tournament, the Bulldogs dropped another heartbreaker (2-1) to a heavily favored Winthrop College squad. The University of Pennsylvania-California also par ticipated in the weekend event. Opening South Atlantic Conference play last Thursday afternoon at Wingate Col lege, the Runnin’ Bulldogs emerged a 2-1 victor in overtime. The team continued to gain momentum three days later vnth a 4-2 double-overtime triumph over the citadel. Setzer and his ’Dogs stand at a 3-2 mark (1- 0) in conference play). On the female side of the sport, the Lady Runnin’ Bulldogs fell to Brevard College in the team’s inaugural game. Though they lost 5-0, the squad showed much promise and received excellent play from freshman goaltender Ellen McCann. Dixon Blvd. 484-BOWL expires Oct. 31, 1990 Volleyball Off and Runnin’ By Ernest Brown Staff Writer Gardner-Webb’s Lady Bulldogs vol leyball team is off and running this year vwth two victories under its belt, against non conference opponents Queens and Lees- McRae. As the new season opened against Queens, GW had many things working in its favor, including teamwork, experience, and a good mental attitude. Three words to describe this year’s team would be: tenacity, team effort, and hard work. The most crucial factor of the match against Queen’s College was the ladies’ ability to work together as a team. Beth Ralph took over the helm this year for the team, and she has made some chan ges in both offensive and defensive strategies. Concerning the Queens game, she said, "We played well as a team. As long as we do that, we should have a good season. The team is more experienced this year, and we have players from last year who have greatly improved from last season." The first triple-match was held on September 12th against Pfeiffer' and Belmont Abbey. The team defeated both clubs easily. Recently however, the ladies dropped two close conference contests against the Catawba Indians and Elon College. The Lady Bulldogs are hoping to rebound vnth a homestand against Wingate on Sept. 25. Upcoming Matches Sept. 27 Queens (H) Oct. 2 Belmont Abbey (A) Oct. 5 Carson-Newman (H) Oct. 8 Presbyterian (A) Oct. 10 Pfeiffer (A) It’s Football Time By Marty White Sports Editor Off to a disappointing start, the Ruimin’ Bulldogs football team hopes to rebound September 22, against West Virginia Tech. In the season opener against Livingston University of Alabama on September 8, the visiting ’Dogs were simply overmanned and fell to the powerful NCAA Division II school by a 43-10 margin. On September 15, the Bulldogs and a host of Gardner-Webb fans made the journey to Newberry, South Carolina, to face off against the Indians of Newberry College. After trailing the entire game, the Bulldogs took a 10-9 lead on a one-yard dive by quarterback Charles Bames with less than three minutes to play. The Indians, however, drove down the field and took the lead with a 37-yard field goal with just 18 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs were not finished though. On the last play of the game, Barnes connected wdth Terry Mc Gowan on a "Hail-Mary" pass. As time ex pired, McGowan reached the Newberry two-yard line before being pulled down. Accolades should be given to Barnes, wide-receiver James Harbison, kicker Kwasnic, rurming backs Carlos Howard and McGowan, defensive lineman Gabe Wilkins, linebacker Darren Nosal, and safety James Ingram. The entire offensive line also deserves credit. The unit played the entire game without any substitutions. The ’Dogs open home activities on Septem ber 29 against Wingate College.
