I’m looking forward to working here." Dr. David Yelton By Lynn S. Britt Staff Writer Dr. David Yelton, the newest faculty ad dition to the GWC Social Science depart ment, is truly a history buff. History is Yelton’s hobby and his job. He said, "Lx)ts of people look at history as some ‘thing’ that’s stuck on a shelf, but it’s all around us. History is not something that’s dead, and history is so important to me." Besides teaching, Yelton is one of the advisors for the Social Science Club at GWC. Yelton completed his undergraduate work at Appalachian State University. From Boone, he went to UNC-Chapel Hill to complete his masters and doctorate. Yelton also taught at UNC-CH while work ing on his doctorate. He is currently revis ing his dissertation so it can be published soon. Yelton’s speciahzation is 20th Century Germany. He is continuing to research topics like Nazi Germany. He says he was in West Germany for six months before the Berlin Wall came down on Nov. 9, 1989, and would like to go back to Eastern Ger many. Yelton had some knowledge of Gardner- Webb because his father is a 1950 graduate of GWC. Yelton originally applied for a temporary position filling in for Donna El lington for one semester. THe position was expanded to one year, and Yelton is ex pected to be at GWC for the fall of 1991. Yelton and his wife, Denise, are both originally from Rutherfordton, NC. The native of Monterrey, Mexico is teaching six Spanish labs this semester. Emma says that she come to the US to familiarize herself with our language, cul ture, and educational system. She taught at the University of Nuevo Leon in Mexico where she noticed that students did not take advantage of the professor’s willingness to help students. She says that Gardner- Webb students are very lucky to have professors who are available to advise them and to help them with their studies. As far as cultural differences, Emma says there are very few. Monterrey is very close to Texas, so they have been influenced by the American way of living while still managing to preserve most of their Mexican heritage. Emma finds US people very friendly. Friendliness along with the attitudes of professors and students have helped her to make the adjustments she felt necessary to function outside of her own culture. David Carscaddon By Kevin Walter Staff Writer There are many new faculty members at the Webb this year. Professor David Carscaddon is one of the new instructors. He has been teaching Psychology since August. Carscaddon received his under graduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and his masters from Moorehead State University in Ken tucky. Before joining the GWC faculty, he taugh part-time for two years. Now, Carscaddon also works as a counselor at the Cleveland County Health Center in the child-youth division. He also counsels men who have been arrested for battering their wives and/or children. Carscaddon, who has had several articles published, has studied the relationship be tween poverty and psychiatric symptoms. He has also published a theory dealing with a play therapeutic technique which he designed for use with hyperactive children. We greet Professor Carscaddon and look forward to his spending many more enjoy able years here at GWC.
