The PUot, page 6 SPORTS Success Men’s Basketball Begins By Marty White Sports Editor The Runnin’ Bulldogs men’s basketball team opened strongly in the Rotary Dixie Classic held in Paul Porter Arena on the Gardner-Webb campus. Under the leader ship of new head coach Jim Johnson, the Bulldogs made quick work of Allen Univer sity in the first round of the tournament. The real fireworks, however, came in the championship game against powerful Pfeif fer College. The Falcons came into the game as defending District 26 champions Football Wrap-up By Marty White Sports Editor The Runnin’ Bulldogs football team closed its season impressively with consecu tive wins over Mars Hill College and Pres byterian College. The team finished with a 2-8 record and placed sixth in the South At lantic Conference. The two wins were par ticularly rewarding because of the many hardships throughout the earlier part of the season. With only two seniors departing and good prospects coming out of high school, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will be the team to beat in ‘91. By Marty White Sports Editor On the heels of the most successful season in its history, the men’s soccer team garnered several national and conference honors. Dennis Puckerin, who led the Runnin’ Bulldogs in goals (25) and points (59), was selected to the All-District, All- Area 8, and NAIA All-American teams. Under the leadership of Coach Tony Set- zer the Bulldogs improved from seventh place in the South-Atlantic Conference in 1989 to an 8-12-0 mark and a fourth place finish. Setzer was honored as Conference Coach of the Year. He is pleased with the season, but is already looking ahead, plan ning on improvement next fall. Defensive standout Lennox Charles joined Puckerin on the All-Conference and All-District squads. Jorge Lopez was also a first-team All-Conference performer, while Richard Jones was named to the second-team All-Conference team. Setzer praised goalkeepers Greg Clark and John Todaro for their play and hard work throughout the season. The men’s soccer team has a bright out look for next year with the same basic squad returning. The team is losing three seniors, Jason Barnes, Mark Smith, and Efrin Tirado, who will be the first graduates from GWC that spent four years with the soccer program. Tri-State Rents 74 By-pass at Mooresboro U-HAUL (704) 434-5109 and ranked seventh in the nation. The Bulldogs started slowly, and it appeared that Pfeiffer would run away with the con test. Led by Jules Springs, who finished with 31 points, and Thomas Turner with 22, the men battled back to take the lead with three minutes remaining in the game. The Falcons, however, hit several clutch shots and were leading by three points with five seconds to go. With one tick of the clock showing. Turner missed a three-point shot but was fouled in the process. Needing to hit all three free throws to force an overtime period, the 6-5 junior did just that. Pfeiffer went on a 5-0 scoring run early in overtime and the Bulldogs were not able to make up the difference, falling by a final score of 91-89. Springs and Turner were named to the All-District team while Pur vis Dukes and Jerry Cholette both scored in double figures. Though not much was expected of the team this year, the impressive play of the Runnin’ Bulldogs has changed many peoples thinking. Come support the team as they thunder through the season.
