The Pilot, page 2 To anyone who cares about GWC As most of you know there was an elec tion last week. The election was to deter mine who would be representing the stu dents of Gardner-Webb and expressing their wishes to the powers-that-be. Now, what most of you don’t know is that these people rurming for the various offices of the executive positions of the Student Govern ment Association gave speeches on the eve ning of Monday, March 18, 1991. The reason for which I am assuming that neither the students or the administration did not and do not know of this is on account of no more than thirty students were present (and this includes those running for office) and there were absolutely no administrators present. In case anyone was wondering why there appears to be so many problems at 'The Web" this might well be it. NO ONE CARES, NOT EVEN THE AD MINISTRATION. The Gardner-Webb College Student Handbook states, 'The SGA is the most important student or ganization on campus for it represents the ideals of the student and interprets the standards and ideals of the college." Ap parently this is a misprint for if this state ment were true, then a larger, much larger, number of students would have been there as well as several key administrators and maybe even some faculty. So, to save the guilty person who wrote this preposterous lie about the role of the SGA and its mem bers the time of rewriting it in a truthful manner, I have performed the arduous task of transcribing the genuine role of the SGA here at GWC. The SGA is a good way for a student to kill time and stay out of trouble for a couple of hours a day, if he or she is really involved; and if they serve on the senate then they need only bestow a mere hour bimonthly, and they can only miss two meetings. The good thing about SGA is that it looks good on an application to another school. So for the year or so that half of you will be here try to think about being a part of the SGA. I’m curious what the role of the SGA was at our administrators’ schools. By the way where was the SGA’s advisor Monday eve ning? By Kevin Walter Many people, when they enter college, be come homesick, and some still do further on in their college career. I am glad to say that I haven’t experienced this. I have also heard many people complain of the lack of things to do here on campus. It is not that there isn’t anything to do-people just don’t get involved. That is what I am trying to en courage all of you to do. There are numerous groups you can get involved with. Namely the OEC (Outdoor Explorers Club), the debate team, The Pilot, BSU, the chorale, the Webb players, the yearbook, SGA, and the recently added recycling program. There are even more. If you aren’t into clubs, you can try out for athletic teams, and you can definitely get involved wdth the intramurals. If you say there isn’t anything to do and it’s too boring around here then maybe you should leave your room and get involved in something. If you are interested in getting into something and don’t know how, there are several things you can do. One, look in your 89-90 handbook on pages 51-58, and it will tell you who to contact. Two, talk to people who are involved in the activity. If you can’t find anyone you can even drop a note to me in Box 942. So, don’t just sit there, get up and find something. It isn’t going to pop out from under your bed and bite you. Go on, get in volved and have some fun. Yoo-Hoo Cans & Newspapers By Greg Carpenter As I threw my Yoo-Hoo can into the recy cling box, I wonder how other people feel about recycling. I do not know if people stop to think, or even care about what happens to the refuse they create. The problem is, most people don’t. This has to change. An effort to recycle cans and newspapers has begun on the Gardner-Webb Campus. I have to wonder if it will get off the ground. I wonder if people really care about our en vironment. It is our duty as responsible citizens to take care of our enviroimient. We must do what our elected officials seem to be unable to do. We must save our envirormient for our children. A lot of people imply that they care about the environment. Some are sincere. I make a special plea to all students. Please, place your cans and newspapers in the spe cial boxes which are marked in your residence halls. If you have a special interest in this project, you may attend our recycling com mittee meetings. We are a small, en thusiastic group. We meet every Thursday at 9:20 a.m., and we would welcome everybody that feels a need to do the right thing. We meet in Withrow 107. Some Things Jesus Never Said By Don Durham One indication of greatness is whether or not the world thought enough of what a per son did, or said, to quote that person after the life he or she lived is over. Many great men and women have been remembered throughout history for the magnificent lives they lived, and teachings they gave. There is no question that Jesus is among those most quoted figures in history in a multi tude of cultures around the world. When quoting an individual, there is al ways the pressing responsibility to be as true as possible to not only the words a per son used but to the meaning given to those words. I am sadly convinced, because of the Ufestyles of most Christians (actually all of us who call ourselves Christian), that there are some deep misconceptions about some of the statements Jesus made while on earth. Please let me mention a few. JESUS NEVER SAID... ...by their suits you will know them (Mt. 7:20) ...ask and you will be made rich, seek and God will give you your way, knock and God will take you wherever you want to go. (Mt. 7:7) ...seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and then go and do as you please. (Mt. 6:33) ...lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, so that God will be impressed. (Mt. 6:20) ...any one who desires to be first must run to the front and break in line. (Mt. 20:27) ...go and sell what you have so that you can buy other things you like better. (Mk. 10:21) ...whoever desires to follow me, let him take up his cross (an emblem of suffering and shame) and make jewelry out of it. (Mk 8:34) ...Be a neighbor (good Samaritan) to the man in the ditch only when 1. he’s clean, 2. you know there are no more thieves that might hurt you, and 3. you are positive he will appreciate it and will not take ad vantage of you. (Lk. 10:25-37). Most of us can quote the above verses as they should be, but can we prove we know their meaning? The staff of The Pilot is sad to inform you that "Vic" has gone on permanent Spring Break. Gone, but not soon forgotten. LOOK BvTC N8CWT TO ^ £D\T0«V(VL\2ep...
