Friday, December 6,1991 No. 6 Sound of Music a Success By Aimee Stewart Staff Writer Gardner-Webb College Theatre has come a long way in a short time. This year is no exception. With a theatre orientation, open house, and a reader’s theatre perfor mance behind them, the GWC theatre has drawn themselves up and performed the musical of all musicals. This semester’s musical was Rogers and Hammerstein’s "Sound of Music." Directed by John Brock and Assistant Director Karen Martin Hough, the GWC theatre put the audience back into Austria in the late thirties, with the Von Trapp family. The musical, set in the late 1930s, portrays a family of seven children, their father, and a governess, who comes from the Abbey to take care of the children. GWC alumna Gina McWhirter, did a great job as Maria, the governess, and Scott Cooper, GWC senior, did a great portrayal of Baron Von Trapp. The cast of the "Sound of Music" com posed of GWC students, administration and the nearby community brought forth both wonderful acting skills and musical talent. GWC newcomers include Trena Rober son, Michelle Dyer, Scott Cooper, Heather McMurry, Chris Bridges, Tiffany Staton, Brian Miller, Andy White, Ernest Brown, Heidi Roland, Karen Snyder, Debbie Whitehead, and David Hawes. Resident Directors Melanie Johnson (Stroup) and Mark Sears (Spangler/Myers) did mar velous jobs in the musical also. GWC veteran actors included Dawn Jes- See SOUND, page 3 GARDNER-WEBB COLLEGE Sewing (Ac entinc ^vtcUtenr'2Ve66^ ea*iuKu*Ut^ Boiling Springs, North Carolina ■\U1)NL Costine Joins GWC By Dawn E. Camp Editor GWC now has a new director of physical plant. Larry Costine came to GWC from Florida Southern College where he worked in plant operations for the past 17 years. The Lakeland, Florida, native says that he enjoys working with college students. "College kids are alive-full of energy," he said. "Gardner-Webb is a growing, thriving college, and I’m looking forward to being here." As director of physical plant at GWC, Costine will be in charge of maintenance and grounds. He said that he was im pressed by the college. "I think this campus has the potential to be one of the most beautiful campuses in the eastern United States." Costine said that his first priority is im proving the condition of the grounds. He indicated that the major problem is the lack of money allocated to groundskeeping. Costine is one of three on-campus employees of ServiceMaster, an inde pendent company, which is contracted to oversee physical plant operations. He is married and has two children. Costine is replacing Russ Croft, who will continue to live in Shelby but will serve as a regional technical specialist for Service Master. Croft, who supervised many of the cam pus improvements for the last four years, said, "I leave with some sadness, but Gardner-Webb has improved in the last four years and will continue to improve." Adopt-a-Student By Dawn E. Camp Editor GWC staff members have adopted stu dents. But the students aren’t cooperating. According to Dean Jerome Scott, staff members started an Adopt-a-Student program to help aid retention. "Students, especially freshmen, may have problems that they need to discuss, and I think it’s important that they have someone to go to besides the faculty," Scott said. "We’re trying to encourage staff involve ment." Each staff member adopted five fresh men and sent the students personal notes encouraging them to drop by and talk, Scott said. "Almost every staff member has had poor response. At most one or two of the students have responded. We want every student to respond." Scott said that the program will continue, but he hopes that more students will take the time to talk with the staff.
