Men Strengthen Hold on #1 Position Ladies’ Basketball

The Runnin’ Bulldogs men’s basketball
team went into Saturday night’s contest in
Clinton, SC, in the midst of a two-game
losing skid and facing the second-place Blue
Hose of Presbyterian College. When the
night was over, however, the Blue Hose had
suffered their second loss of the year at the
hands of the Bulldogs, and GW had ex
tended its league lead to two games.
Led by Jules Springs and Jerry Chollette,
the Bulldogs (12-7, 7-1 SAC) won a fierce
defensive struggle that actually proved to be
an easier victory than the last one over PC
in Paul Porter Arena just a few weeks ago.
Presbyterian started two 6-8 players and
a 6-10 center on the front line in hopes of
taking advantage of the smaller Bulldogs.
GW did well sagging in defensively on the
big men as senior center Pat Colson
registered four of the Bulldogs’ six blocked
shots. "Our guys really went to the ball well
on defense," commented GW head coach
Jim Johnson. 'That really made a dif
ference."
Springs, who scored 25 points on the eve
ning, got the Bulldogs rolling early as he
nailed three of the teams five three-pointers
in the first half. Chollette, who added 16,
contributed with his usual hustle throughout
the contest. The Bulldogs led throughout
the game and managed to hit some big shots
in the closing minutes to prevent the game
from becoming yet another nail-biter. Just
one week earlier, the team rallied from a 10-
point deficit with 2:18 remaining in the game
to defeat Catawba College in overtime.
Another key for the Bulldogs was the ex
cellent ball handling by Purvis Dukes.
Though he had struggled of late, Dukes did
not commit a turnover in 27 minutes of play
at the point guard position. The Bulldogs
only had 10 turnovers as a team. Colson led
the team Saturday night with 10 rebounds,
and Springs dished out three assists.
The Bulldogs seem to have awoke from a
two-game slumber. They played inspired
ball Saturday night and looked proned to
capture the SAC crown. They will need to
remain focused as they start down the home
stretch of regular-season conference games.

Fredia Lawrence scored 24 points and
grabbed 13 rebounds, but it was not enough
as the Lady Bulldogs dropped a 78-69
decision to Presbyterian College, Saturday
night.
The Blue Hose put five players in double
figures, a chief reason for the Bulldogs’
downfall. Presbyterian held a three-point
lead at the half and managed to turn it into
a 13-point advantage just after the start of
the second half. The Lady Bulldogs never
recovered from the burst and could not get
the lead under seven the rest of the way.
On a brighter note, Lav^rence was num
ber four this week in NAIA women’s
rebounding with a 12.47 average per game.
She was also 19th in scoring with a 22.12
average. Also, sophomore teammate
Mickie Drum is 13th in the nation in assists
with a 6.71 average.
Nationals Bound

GW already has two wrestlers packing
for nationals in Kansas. The first qualifier
was Shavm Watson, who wasted no time by
placing third in Pembrook’s national
qualifier in November. Watson not only
placed in the first tournament of the season,
but he has continued on through the year
thrashing opponents hopes.
Ken Miller decided to keep Watson
company by placing second in the Findlay
Invitational. Miller and Watson not only
travelled to Washington and Lee to help
coach their teammates for national tourney
berths, but they accumulated some more
medals for the trophy case by fighting
through the brackets. Another runner-up
at his weight was freshman Wendell Wil
liamson. The second place finish will throw
Williamson on the bus to Kansas as well.
