Earth Day 1992: An Outdoor Affair
By Dawn E. Camp
Editor
Thanks to the efforts of a few
concerned students, Earth Day 1992 did
not go by unnoticed on Gardner-Webb’s
campus. The students, including Aimee
Stewart, Angie Lane, Chris Glaves, Greg
Carpenter, and Dawn Camp, and faculty
advisor Tom English planned an
afternoon outside.
Activities started with a picnic dinner
behind the DCC. Some students joined to
play volleyball in the yard. Other events
were held to increase awareness of can
collecting on campus.
At 5:30 p.m., the second-annual GWC
Can Slam was held. Judges Mike
McCalley, Drs. Tom Jones, Rudee Boan,
and Bill Stowe unanimously chose Lance
McNally as the winner. McNally hurdled
another student and landed on an
aluminum can. Though the crush was not
quite perfect, McNally won due to

originality and difficulty of the jump.
Second place in the Can Slam went to Jim
Jefferson.
The next major event was the 13-Can
Dash. Eleven students competed in the
race, in which students had to crush 13
cans and race for the finish line. Ed Faille
won the event, finishing the course in 6.03
seconds. Second place finisher was Chris
Dawkins, 6.28 seconds.
The final winner of the day was in the
can guessing event. Students tried to
guess the number of crushed cans in a
plastic trash bag. Bill Parks won with an
exact guess of 242 cans.
All of the winners won prizes which
were donated by Pizza Connection in
Shelby and by the Student Entertainment
Association.
The main emphasis of the afternoon
was the displays on environmental issues.
Topics include; saving water, household
recycling, ozone, light pollution,
deforestation, landfills, and CD packaging.
A large number of students attended the
Earth Day celebration. Some, English
said, questioned the use of styrofoam
plates at the picnic.
