UWHP DOLDw wonn G-W All-Americans by Marty White Sports Editor The honors keep rolling in for the 1992 NAIA Division I national runner-up Gardner-Webb football team. The Runnin' Bulldogs set an NAIA Division I record by placing seven players on the All-American football squad in a single season. Named to the first team were wide receiver Rodney Robinson, place-kicker Andre Kwasnik, de fensive end Gabe Wilkins, linebacker Dunsey Harper, and James Harbison at defensive back. Linebacker Raymond Jennings and defensive back Terry McGowan were sec- ond-team selections. Seven players were also chosen for Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-America Team. Head Coach Woody Fish was named Co-Coach of the Year and Runnin' Bulldogs quarterback John Craven, who passed for 4,089 yards and 38 touchdowns this season was named Division I Player of the Year. Craven also earned MVP Offensive Back Honor. Harbison was named.MVP Defen sive Back. Wide receiver Robinson, the 1992 South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, earned his fourth All-American selection in 1992. He was previously named to the Kodak (College Division) and the Associated Press (Little) first teams. Other Don Hansen first-team selections were Wilkins and Harper. Kwasnik and Jennings garnered second-team recognition. Congratulations to the Runnin' Bull dogs football team on the best season in school history. The commissioner of the South Atlantic Conference, Ron Eckles, will be in attendance at the USC-Spartanburg home basketball game to present the South Atlantic Conference championship banner to the team. 'Dogs On A Roll by Andrew Hopper Staff Writer The Gardner-Webb University's Run nin' Bulldogs men's basketball team won on January 18 against Longwood by the score of 69-67. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Jerry Chollette with 15 points, Lance Bain added 12 and Kenneth Nelson had 11 points. The Bulldogs were ahead by as many as 14 in the second half. But Longwood an swered with a 18-5 run to cut the lead to 67- 65 with 1:14 left to play. "We built up a big lead and they started to come back, then we started to play tough defense," says Senior guard Greg Ross. The Bulldog's Purvis Dukes hit two crucial free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory. Sophomore guard Billy Palagonia says, "We're a young team and now we are learning how to win the close games." With the win over Longwood, the Bull dogs are now on a three game winning streak. As of January 18,1993, Gardner Webb's Chad Marley is fourth in the district in three point percentage and Mike Lane is sixth in the district. Billy Palagonia is fourth in the district in assists. The Bulldogs are second in the district in team scoring, defense, and leads the district in rebounding. The Bulldogs are looking to continue their winning streak on November 20 against Elon College. Wrestling Bulldogs Starting Strong Despite Adverstiy By Viki 2Leiser Staff Writer After winning their first home match against Pensacola Christian College, the wres tling team hosted their second home match of the season Wednesday night against Pembrooke State and Anderson College. Senior cap tain, John White started the evening with a powerful win of 9-0 against Pembrooke. Freshman, Marc Bopp kept the score going in our direction with his win of 5-4. After several close matches Mark Perrine came through pinning his opponent. In the second match of the night John White and Marc Bopp came out strong, quickly pinning Anderson’s wrestlers. Zeke Allen and Mark Perrine both had impressive victories. Despite their efforts, the wrestling bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking loss to Anderson. After the match, all of the wrestlers agreed that it was great to see so many stu dents cheering them on, they reaUy appreci ate the support. The fact the wrestlers had to fofeit two weight classes hurt them last week. Coach Wince stated, “we can’t afford to give up twelve points to forfeits in such a close match.” Once they have a full team the wrestling bulldogs will be well on their way to victory. Coach Wince and all of the wrestlers would like to invite everyone to their next home match on February 19, where they will wrestle Carson-Newman. Among those were Student Government As sociation President Mike McCalley; Vice- Chair of the Faculty, Dr. Les Brown; the President of the General Board of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina; Vice- President of Dohto University, Mr. Masanori Sakurai and past Presidents E.E Poston and C.E Williams. After these and many other speakers had finished their addresses. Presi dent M. Christopher White spoke to the audi ence. He spoke very passionately of the tran sition from college to university and com pared Gardner-Webb to a rosebud that would start to bloom now. He said he had a dream that by the year 2(XX), Gardner-Webb will continue to make even more advancements. He noted that something like this would never happen again, and we can be sure of that.
