...from the Editor In this issue, we have asked a few of our fellow students their opinion on the new Clinton administration. Opinions vary from limited praise to sharp criticism. This is concurrent with opin ion in most of the popular press. A recent USA Today-CNN poll gave Clinton a 20% disapproval rating, and a Newsweek magazine poll gave him a 32% disapproval rating, the worst disapproval rat ings for any new president since 1953. The American people were looking for a savior in Clinton, and did not realize he is a mere mortal. We hoped that a Democratic President could work with the Democratic Congress. To date, this is not the case. The most important issue in the election last November was the economy. We have to wait until February 17 to know what his plan for the economy is. Mr. Clinton has already gone back on his statement that he can cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. If he doesn't get on the ball (and I don't mean inaugural ball), his first term may be his last. So, what has Clinton done? He has enrolled his teenage daughter in an exclusive private school after praising our public schools in his campaign, and he reunited Fleetwood Mac, at least for one night. He has alienated himself from the mili tary, the Congress, and a large number of the American people by letting gays in the mili tary and endorsing abortion as an acceptable form of birth control. We do have to hand it to Clinton though; he throws one heck 'uv a party. What do they care about? Does Gardner-Webb care about its students and their happiness or harassing its students and getting their money? From my experiences, the only thing Gardner-Webb really cares about is getting our tuition and getting it on time. To Gardner- Webb, you are a big, walking dollar sign. This does not project the current motto unless the motto is "People who care - about money." The practice of revised award letters in No vember is not a caring action; Gardner-Webb needs to acquire a more productive and friendly Financial-Aid and Business Office staff (maybe put them in the same building or at least on the same line of communication). This summer, I confirmed my financial- aid package by making phone calls and writ ing letters. I was assured that I owed $42.00 (wow). I thought this was strange, yet every one I talked to said it was correct. November came and so did a new bill. And who cared? NOT GARDNER-WEBB. Perhaps Gardner-Webb only cares about harassing their students. By this, I mean red tape. For instance, I go to the Business Office and they send me to Financial Aid, who sends me to the Registrar's Office, who sends me to back to the Business Office, where I needed to be in the first place. When I get back to the Business Office, they act like they have never seen me before. This does not show a caring attitude towards my time and stress level. They also tell me that Residence Life is here to make your campus life more enjoy able - because they care; I do not believe them. Dealing with them has become one of my most unpleasant experiences at Gardner- Webb since I arrived on campus. My ID, which gives me access to my dorm, did not work until November 17, 1992 (almost the end of the semester). I have had ants and men in my room, at all hours of the morning, doing heaven knows what. I guess I should consider myself lucky because some people do not even have hot water. By the way, what are the hours of the Residence Life Office? Every time I call or go by, they are not in. Residence Life needs to discover what caring people are. Gardner-Webb's motto, "People who care," is a great concept. Now someone needs to tell Gardner-Webb this. I chose this university because I wanted a personal, car ing touch. Instead, I have been harassed, ignored, frustrated, and upset most of the time. The worst thing is that I am not the only one. Gardner-Webb has many problems to work out. I think one of them is to live up to their motto, and maybe, one day, the defini tion will include students. Michele Owen As you may or may not know, a recent poll conducted by USA Today-CNN indi cated that President Bill Clinton has a 20% disapproval rating from the public concern ing his actions in office. Then, this past week, Newsweek printed the results of a poll which gave Mr. Clinton a 32% disapproval rating among the public - the highest among any new President since 1953. The Pilot decided to ask a few students at GW how they would rank Mr. Clinton on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being poor and 10 being excellent). The average ranking was 5. Opin ions varied from harsh criticism to high praise. Here are some of the comments received on our "Barking Bulldog" student opinion poll: "[Considering he's] in a bad situation, Clinton's probably doing the best he can," said Brian Stewart. "Clinton's worried about what the pub lic thinks of him and impressing everybody," said Andy Jimmo. "We needed a change," replied Destinee Jones. "Clinton didn't keep all [his] campaign promises," said Andrei Coley. "Clinton is not backing down for what he believes in," said Rodney Melton. "He is against every religious belief I hold (abortion etc.)," said Jennifer Franks. "He's trying," said Chad Maddox. "He's bringing Democrats into play and he's not a 'closed in' President," said Allen McIntosh. "He's going against God's standards," said Cindy Whitaker. "I have no idea because I have no time for anything but school work - and the year book," said Julie Trogden. compiled by John Belch rr Suggestions Wanted Special to The Pilot A suggestion box ("Tips") has been placed in the Dover Campus Center, downstairs between the post office and the Campus Store.
