Court 'Dogs by Marty White Sports Editor Both Runnin’ Bulldogs basketball teams experienced tough times in action over the last week. The men’s squad traveled to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to visit the Ter riers of Wofford College. Already leading by thirteen points at the half, Wofford used a 10- 0 second-half spurt to put the 'Dogs away.. Jerry Chollette scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for GWU (12-11, 6-6 South Atlantic Conference) and Mike Lane added 11 points. The squad faced the Catawba Indians Saturday night and put up a tough defense only to fall to the Indians. The Runnin' Dogs started out the first half with an early 11 point lead. Lance Bain came off the bench to shoot six-straight points for the Bulldogs and have 21 points for the night. Art Hinton helped the Bulldogs out with 14 points for the evening. The second half saw the Bulldogs come close to the Indians several times only to have the Indians pull away in the closing minutes with a final score of 97-80. The Bulldogs dropped to 6-8 and 12-14 on the season. The team will see action in Salisbury beginning Friday in the South Atlantic Con ference Tournament. On a brighter note, look for sophomore Lance Bain to play his way into possible post season honors. He was the high-man for the Cornbread Transformed Special Editor to the Pilot The red-hot Gardner-Webb band “Catdaddy,” formerly and possibly better known as “Cornbread Gumby,” has been catch ing the ears of students at many neighboring schools. A regular Wednesday night attraction at Union Station in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the three-man acoustic band has become a crowd favorite of local Wofford College and Converse College students. “Catdaddy,” which features Gardner- Webb students Andy White and John Rice as well as Shelby native Josh McSwain, per formed in the Dover Campus Center last month, put in an appearance at Wingate College this month and is slated to play Mars Hill College on February 26. Besides the regular Wednesday night gig at Union Station, the boys will play at the Foundry in Charlotte on February 26 and at Doggone’s in Spartanburg on February 27. In a recent interview, lead singer White wanted to thank the loyal Gardner-Webb fans who follow the band to its various and sundry venues. ‘Dogs with 30 points against Wofford. In the previous two games, Bain scored 34 and 26 points. The Lady Bulldogs also fell to defeat last Monday night in a home match-up with Catawba. Delaina Adams scored 14 points and Val Crowell added 13 in the 78-55 losing effort. The Lady Bulldogs faced stiff opposition in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at Paul Por ter Arena this past weekend. Friday night saw the Lady Bulldogs fall to Carson-Newman cutting short a tournament performance. Valerie Crowell ran into an injury with a broken hand, while Delaina Adams led team in scoring. This was the final game for the Lady Bulldogs ending the season. Their sound apparently is catching, for the band has a recording date set for Charlotte in March. White and Rice are not the only Gardner- Baseball Update by Marty White Sports Editor The Diamond Dogs fell this past Satur day against USC-Spartanburg 14-5. Sophomore Troy Ozias and Freshman Chris Davis, both put in good efforts at pitch ing only to see the 'Dogs fall to USC. The Runnin’ Bulldogs baseball team ran into excellent pitching last Monday afternoon against Limestone College but still almost managed to come away with a win. Saint pitcher Marcus Haynes, however, was too tough and the Diamond ‘Dogs lost 2- 1 for their first defeat of the season. Haynes carried a no-hitter and a 2-0 lead into the seventh hitting when Will Choate smacked a two-out single. A pair of walks to Bulldog batters in the eighth set up Terry Wright’s run-scoring double but Bulldogs weren't able to pull it out. The GWU baseball squad now stands at 2-2. Webb students involved in “Catdaddy:” David Kinzer performs various percus sion instruments and coordinates the sound during live performances. White also mentioned the services of GWU senior Jody Kafina who “handles all transportation arrangements for us.” Rice, who just recently switched from guitar to bass, commented, “We have a lot of fun making music.
