Presidential
Profiles
Special to the Pilot
In this SGA election, the Presidential and
Vice Presidential candidates will run unop
posed, barring any write-ins.
It has been many a blue moon since a
major SGA office has not been hotly con
tested. One only has to harken back to last
year's race between SGA President Mike
McCauley and candidate Nicole Nichols to
realize how tempers flair during a campaign.
The Pilot spoke to the sole candidates for
President and Vice President of SGA and
formed profiles for your information:
Kevin Cloer is a candidate for president.
He is a rising senior majoring in Business
Administration. He is currently serving as
junior class president.
Cloer's focus is on the issues of increas
ing student visitation and a push to improve
cafeteria service. He also wants to establish an
honor code. He says that he wants to run for
Student Voting
E.J. Dolce
Editorial Topic:
Last year, barely 25% of the student body
voted. Still, most students on campus are not
merely displeased with SGA, but are disgusted
by it. Is that justifiable? Not according to a
former senator [name withheld by request].
"What I'd like to see is a list of names of
the people who voted. Then have the SGA
only listen to their complaints." It was a
profound statement and it shaped the way I
saw the election and SGA.
True, SGA stands for STUDENT Gov
ernment Association, but it is only put in
power by the students who voted and made it
happen. For this reason, only the students who
vote have a right to tap into the power that
their vote established. Right? Right.
Let's be real for a minute. It's true that
SGA has serious problems. I know that it's
always the same people, promising something
new, but nothing ever changes. These are
things that the new SGA has to handle though.
But think about this...
What kind of job would you do if nobody
cared what you did? How much would an "A"
mean to you if your final grade in the class
could only be a "P" for passing or an "F"? In
the same way, why should SGA work hard
when no one cares how they perform except to
complain once or twice a year? Better yet, how
can they work without support anyway?
There are no laws that say SGA must
perform well. Just like you and me, they need
people to push them on to better things. Those
people are you and me. The bottom line is this:
If we don't care who will?

president to "give something back" to Gardner-

JefT S. Price is the candidate for vice

dents if elected. He would also like to see
senate meetings televised over WEBNET.
Price's platform is based on the idea that
communication between the office of vice
president and his constituents is vital.
Price says that the things he saw while
serving as a senator is not all that could be done
by the organization. He wants to instigate
change.
