I just wanted to make a point of clarifica tion on the recent reference to rings for cheer leaders. The cheerleaders, like the athletic trainers, and other student support personnel involved with the football program, will have the opportunity to purchase a championship ring. They do not "get" a ring. The individuals on the football team pay half the cost of their rings. With all the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm the cheerleaders displayed during this year's football season, I feel it would be an injustice not allowing them the right to pur chase a ring. I do not feel that allowing them this right diminishes the accomplishments of the football team in the least. I also want to take this opportunity to thank the student body for your vocal support of our football team. The championship game was, without question, the greatest display of school spirit since I first came to Gardner- Webb as a student in 1978. Ozzie McFarland Athletic Director There has been a recent discussion on whether or not the cheerleaders should receive "championship rings." I say "NO." Cheerleaders everywhere are struggling to become respected as "athletes," but yet would an athletic team wear a ring they hadn't earned? Cheerleading has it's own national competition, and I suggest if you want a ring, you need to earn it there. The same principle applies to everyone. I think, the players and coaches worked for this and the earned it. Anyone else who wants one is just cashing in on someone else's hard work David McAmis Into the Mailbox If you are currently enrolled and interested in the Nursing Program (Ad. The following paragraphs are from page 8 of the 1990-91 undergraduate catalog: Gardner-Webb College strives to: Main tain its commitment to the Christian faith through the Baptist denomination, fostering the conviction that God exists and that He is revealed in Jesus Christ. This community recognizes that no truth can be separate from the ultimate truth of Jesus Christ. This truth, fearing nothing from investigation, is reflected in every discipline. Instill in its students a dedication to the pursuit of knowledge, developing within the context its Christian mission a program of critical thinking through a curriculum of lib eral arts, preprofessional studies, and profes sional studies. This intellectual commitment demands academic excellence, moral integ rity, intellectual honesty, and recognition of the dignity of each individual. Engender the belief that Christian growth and academic knowledge, to inspire service to humanity, encouraging in students a commit ment of a life of learning and a dedication to aiding all members of society. Through this service the whole being is fulfilled. The col lege as an example of service, dedicates itself to serving its community and the larger world. I will now question the sections in bold. 1)1 feel that the only thing that is being instilled in myself as a student is apathy and religious overkill. 2) Essays are good for implementing the execution of critical think ing (just a little plug for Senate Bill #1"). 3) Demands academic excellence and intellec tual honesty? Yeah, whatever. 4) I won't even touch the statement about the commitment to a life of learning. As to why I haven't attended Dimension (notice I left the "s" off of Dimensions because I feel that the ones I did attend only showed the religious side of things therefore it only shows a Dimension, not Dimensions). Much like Henry David Thoreau, I felt that I could not and would not attend something that I felt was hypocritical and one-sided. I will go this semester because I plan to go to law school and don't need, or want, that ill-gotten "F" on my transcript. Read the following from Henry David Thoreau and apply it to Gardner-Webb: "Unjust laws exist: shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or shall we transgress them at once? Men generally, under such a government as this, think that, if they should resist, the remedy would be worse. Why is it not more apt to anticipate and provide for reform? Why does itnot cherish its wise minority. Why does it cry and resist before it is hurt? Why does it not encourage its citizens to be on the alert to point out its fault, and do better than it would have them?" For any of the religious people I have offended, remember that religion and faith are two different things. Also, remember "That a specialist is one who knows everything about something and nothing about something else" (Ambrose Bierce). So let us all try to deepen our internal intellect before we build our great "Halls", for a house is not a home nor is a building knowledge. Gus King Ed. Note: The following letter replaces one (by the same writer) that was withdrawn before presstime AT HIS REQUEST, without any urging by us. A TRUE LETTER OF APPRECIATION Some of you may not have any idea what I’m talking about, but this not my original letter to The Pilot. My first letter was to say the least HATE FUL! Since that letter was written, I have leamed a very valuable lesson. Out of anger many things are said, most often statements thatnoraially should not be said to begin with. Not that they may not be tme, but they could be stated in a more appropriate way. Christians believe that a person must con tinually tum the other cheek. Well, sometimes you tum the other cheek until your head is almost knocked off. I think a better way to handle anger as an adult is to express it in a normal, healthy way. I am writing this letter in hopes that the reader will leam the lesson that I have leamed: the printed word can damage many people, more than in tended. Think before you act! Be careful to consider all the consequences. To all who know of what I've done, I hope I have not tainted my image... To those who haven't the foggiest indea of what I'm talking about, please do not think that this is a campaign ploy. I have faith that regardless of the results of the upcoming election, a qualified person will be serving in student entertainment. Finally, Dr. Stowe and The Pilot Staff, thank you for letting me redeem myself and helping me avoid a major catastrophe. Brian Dixon FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE NO CHOICE IN THE SGA ELECTIONS? Well, you DO! Those who observed the event stood in snow flurries as the buildings housing student publications (the Pub. House) and security were dedicated in honor of Dr. Gene Poston, a former president of Gardner- Webb. The buildings have received new, and badly needed, equipment, as well as a fresh coat of paint inside and out.
