Diamond ’Dogs Go West to San Diego by Marty White Sports Editor Fresh from a fun and educational tour nament in San Diego, California, the Runnin' Bulldogs baseball team is primed for South Atlantic Conference action. The squad was riding a seven game win ning streak going into the Point Loma Nazarene College Spring Classic. Though they were win-less on the west coast jaunt, the Diamond 'Dogs will benefit greatly from competing against such high caliber teams as Baker Uni versity of Kansas, Hawaii Pacific University, Point Loma, and Dohto University of Japan. The three American schools are all ranked in the NAIA top ten while the Japanese club was made up of all-stars from three interna tional teams. After battling the icy conditions at the close of spring break, the 'Diamond Dogs flew out of Charlotte/Douglas International Airport for San Diego during the wee hours of Monday morning. Upon arrival, they toured the famous San Diego Zoo and began preparations for the opening game of the tournament the following day. Three of the four games the club played were at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. The early starts enabled the players to visit the beaches and sample San Diego's night-life. A highlight of the tournament was the pregame ceremonies with Dohto University. Consistent with Japanese traditions, the play- Tennis Team Travels to Virginia by Andrew Hopper Staff Writer The Gardner Webb University's Runnin' Bulldogs Men's Tennis team traveled to Vir ginia to take on Liberty University. The Bulldogs came short of a victory with a 4-3 loss. Each match was fought long and hard. The winners were David Jones (6- 0,6-3) and Kevin Bess (6-3,6-2) with Chad Lefteris and Brian Reijngoud winning in doubles (8-2). When asked how he felt about the match Doug Clarke replied, "We could not win the big points." Kevin Bess played the best match of his life. I asked Doug to describe Kevin's perfor mance and he said, "[Bess was] on fire!" ers exchanged gifts, including Dohto Univer sity baseball caps. Some players managed to break the con siderable language barrier and trade Gardner- Webb souvenirs for Dohto T-shirts. On the final day in sunny southern Cali fornia, the team toured San Diego's Sea World and visited with Shamu. Other members vis ited nearby Tiajuana, Mexico. Traveling to a foreign nation was an educational experience for everyone, especially those who had never been outside the United States. "The trip was a tremendous opportunity. It was great to be able to leam about a part of our country that we otherwise would never have been able to see," said first baseman Chris Shuford. The players worked during the entire fall semester to fmance the trip. Come out and support the Diamond 'Dogs as they make their bid for the South Atlantic Conference title.
