No. 1 August, 1993 The Official Campus Newspaper Boiling Springs, NC Residence Life collects new ‘communications’ fee Upon returning to school, resident stu dents found that they will be required to pay a new communications fee of $40 each semester per roommate and $80 for singles. This new communications system will let G-WU resident students take advantage of bulk buying power. Each room is outfitted with phone and cable jacks which are opera tional as soon as the occupant plugs in a phone or hooks the cable to a TV. Each resident student will be billed for this service, and if the student does not pay the fee, transcripts and grades will be held, regis tration for classes will be prevented, and a room change may be required. Each resident student will be given a 4- digit number to serve as a phone number. Residents will also be given a card with a code on it so that they can make long distance calls. The purpose of this code is to keep a student from receiving unwanted long dis tance charges made by a roommate or a friend. Each student will be billed individually for their long distance calls. If the card which has the code on it is lost, a code replacement fee will be assessed to the student. There is also a credit limit set for the amount of long distance calls a student can make in a certain time period. Residence Life claims this will prevent abuse and unexpected high bills. Residence Life also claims that this plan Illusionists to perform during Welcome Back Week The Spencers are billed as "America’s favorite illusion team." The husband and wife team of Kevin and Cindy Spencer will be performing magic and illusions on Thursday, 8 p.m., at the Dover Theatre. "Well, we're going to be different than any other magic show you've ever seen," Kevin Spencer says, describing his show. "We try very hard to give (an audience) something different." Carl Rosen, keyboardist/vocalist, will per form on Wednesday, 8 p.m., at the Dover Theatre. His style is compared to that of Billy Joel and Elton John. Comedian Robbie Prinz, who has ap peared on MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour show, will also perform during orientation week on Friday, 8 p.m., at the Dover Theatre. Saturday night. The Jump Club will present a laser, video dance from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 a.m. in the LYCC, Dancers will be $252.20 [2 persons] G-WU Local Local Comm. Phone Cable Statistics provided by Residence Life. will save callers up to $7.50 a month in sur charges which are charged for using a calling card. Students will not have to pay an addi tional fee if they decide to change rooms. A disadvantage of the phone system is that students may hear a call back tone when all campus lines are in use. Students will not be able to accept collect calls either. Also special calling plans currently en joyed by students will not be available with this system. If a student wishes to use an alternate calling plan, they must purchase a private line from Southern Bell, as well as pay the communications fee. The reasoning for a mandatory fee is that Residence Life cannot offer the plan without cooperation from every student on campus. Robbie Printz Appeared on MTV's "Half Hour Comedy Hour," and show cased at the 1993 NACA National Conference. A student-led Sunday service will be in the Dover Chapel at 11 a.m. with special guest speaker, a former president of the Southern Baptist Association. The week concludes with a freshman variety show Sunday, 8 p.m., in the Dover Theatre. Residence Life claims that this new plan willsavestudents with a roommate up to $140 for two semesters. This figure is derived from the difference between the cost of local phone and local cable services with the cost of G-WU communications (see chart). Cable is not optional this year as it was last year. The cable cost is included in the communications fee. Each room will have to pay an exU'a amount for premium channels such as HBO or Showtime. Private phone lines from Southern Bell are still available in the rooms, but residents must still pay the communications fee in addi tion to the cost of a private line.
