2 77/£ P/LOr / September 12, 1993 Editorial Page The Barkin’ Bulldog Gandncr-Webb University THE PILOT Campus Box 5103 Phone ext. 4389 Greg Carpenter Dr. Bill Stowe Editor Advisor Staff Kevin Bess, Mark Dixon, E.J. Dolce, Andrew Hopper, Julianne Kuykendall, Chad Maddox, Bill Parks, Andrew White Stacy Stanley - Business Manager Printed by Shelby Printing Editor's Letter - On the lake Upon returning to school, it was surpris ing to find that the lake had a small amount of water in it. After the announcement was first made that Gardner-Webb was to receive this new $1.5 million lake, there were mixed feelings over the need for a lake, considering the fact that other areas in academics needed, and still need, improvement. There was even a group of students who jokingly referred to G-W as "Lakeside University" in those months. Now, as the lake is filling, it is easier to imagine just what the lake will mean to G-W - if the area surrounding the lake is used to its potential. A lake should have comfortable spots, shaded by large tress. Picnic tables should be in abundance and benches should line its edge. As you approach the lake, there should be paddle boats drifting from shore to shore and a diving board in the middle where people can sunbathe on the planks. There should be fields for dogs to roam and trails for people to walk and bicycle. And what is a lake if it is not for fishing? Currently, the area around the lake is covered with straw in order to grow grass on the hills which encircle it. It remains to be seen if Lake Hollifield, named for the family who graciously donated the money, will be a such a place of rest and recreation. There is a legitimate fear that the lake will become a breeding ground for acts of vandalism and littering, as is the case in some residence halls. After visiting the lake, a visit to the Boil ing (or bubbling) Spring, from which our town takes its name, revealed that the ground sur rounding the stream was covered with bits of newspaper and fast food receptacles. Upon entering the gazebo, a newspaper was found in the water and cigarette butts were found on the ground along with a shoe. Hopefully the lake will become, and stay, an aesthetically pleasing addition to the cam pus and that careless littering, which took place at the Spring, does not turn the lake into an eyesore. While the adminisu-ation is partly to blame by not educating students via a campus- wide conservation program, we have to realize that Lake Hollifield is here to stay. We might as well make the most of what the lake will have to offer instead of defacing it in the name of protest or indifference. Readers respond with their comments: Q. Do you like the system. Does G-WU conimunications offer you the services you need? How do you feel about mandatory participation? No. Yes, but the phone plan really leaves a lot to be desired. I do not like (the mandatory participation). I would rather do it the way it was last year. Carolyn Whiteside Not really. (The system) is too much trouble. Sometimes the code doesn't work. Good. Steve Nanney No! People cannot get through after 8 p.m. My mom called 13 times on night before she could get through. (Mandatory participa tion) is not fair. Katrina Hall Not Really, there are too many numbers to dial and the lines are jammed at night. Yes. I disagree (with mandatory compliance). We should not be forced to use this or any system. Letters to the Editor Gus returns .. . It seems as though Gardner-Webb's SGA has eluded placidness once more. Al ready, rumors are circulating about the fact that the SEA (Student Entertainment Associa tion) and some of the other executive officers are having problems. For the sake of the student body, I hope that none of its members are nyctophobic because, if the rumors are true, then there are surly going to be some dark days here at the Webb. Fear not fellow students/peers, the "Cata lyst" is not nyctophobic, so if duty calls once again I will come forth in the time of need and again become the ubiquitous iconoclastic cata lyst that I was meant to be. For your sake and mine, I hope that cer tain members (you know who you are) of the SGA executive branch can avoid being puer ile. If they cannot, then let them suffer from their "dean like" megalomania for the day of tough skins has arisen. Heed my words or we all shall witness an imbroglio within G-WU's SGA. By the way, in case you have not figured it out yet... I'm back!! Gus King Hey, good to see you back among the fold Gus, and somebody grab the dictionary! We do not have freedom of choice. Carla Ramsey No. No. I disagree (with mandatory compiance). This new service has cost me three weeks without a phone authorizaiton code. There are very few lines when someone needs to call in {only 40 long distance lines to be exact - ed. note). Plus the fact that you cannot accept collect calls or use an AT&T credit card. Joel Frye Yes. Yes. I like it. Doug Clark Yes. We need some way to get call wait ing and *69. It saves each student money. Kevin Cloer In some ways. Yes. Cost should be included in your room and board. Crystal Baker Yes. Yes. I think cost should be included in room and board. Jennifer Carlton Yes, I like it. Yes, it is fine with me. It only benefits the long distance students. Christina Greene As you can see, opinions are varied on this controversial subject. Obviously, Resi dence Life has a few bugs to work out of the system and students have to become orien tated to the system. Mandatory participation seems to be a hot topic. We will conduct a follow-up poll next semester, after we have all lived with this system awhile, and compare the reults with this survey. ■ Death destroys a man; the idea of death saves him. E.M. Forster, Howards End Artists Needed The Pilot needs an artist for political and feature cartoons. Political (& otherwise) Cartoonists If interested, drop by the Pub. House on Monday at 6 p.m. or call Greg at ext. 4690 or 4389. The Barkin’ Bulldog Question For The Next Issue Q. Do you like the fact that residence halls are locked 24 hours? Send your response to Campus Box 5103 or place in the folder on Pub. House door.
