Bulldogs face conference rivals on Homecoming, pages Gardner'Webb University THE PILOT Special Homecoming Section pages 4-5 No. 5 October 8, 1993 Tlie Official CamfHis Newspaper Boiling Springs, NC Student Government defines goals by E J. Dolce staff writer Kevin Cloer, along with his fellow stu dent government executive officers, has the unenviable task of untangling a mess that has been plaguing the Student Government Asso ciation (SGA) for a couple of years now. Passage of a new SGA Constitution may be one step in steering the SGA out of “dire straights,” what Jeff Price, vice president of SGA, referred to SGA’s current situation. Under new leadership, the organization has defined its goals for the upcoming aca demic year. “Updating the constitution and increas ing visitation are our two biggest goals,” said Constitutional Concerns The senate voted affirmatively to pass a new constitution at their last meeting. Here follows a list of concerns (in italics) by The Pilot editorial staff: Article IV, Student Senate; Section B; 2. The Senator shall be a member of the class from which he is elected and be free from disciplinary proba tion. Taken literally, this means that the senator must be a “he” and will not have to answer to disciplinary charges after elected. Section B may be assumed to be qualifications for the position of senator, but is not labeled as such. Article IV, Student Senate; Section C; 2. The Senate shall remove, after due process, and Execu tive officer. Senator, or member of the Judicial Council by a two-thirds majority vote of its mem bership. Due process is not defined, and no mention of a hearing is given. Article V, Executive Body; Section A; 3. These officers (executive body) shall be elected at a time and in a manner fixed by the Elections Committee and shall hold office for a term of one year pro vided eligibility for office is maintained, or until their successors are elected and qualified. Not even a specific month for elections is designated. Article V, Executive Body; Section B. Qualifi cations of President; 2. The President shall be a rising Junior or Senior at the time he/she takes office. Traditionally, only seniors, who have usually had up to three years experience at a school, are allowed to run for president. A prece dent such as this allows the opportunity for it to be open to all underclassmen eventually. 3. The President must be a member of Student Senate prior to his/her service in this capacity. "The '75 constitution was too strict. The proposed constitution will give SGA more power and leeway and correct inconsistencies." Cloer. “Our mission is to convince the student body that SGA is on their side and does have the power to change things.” One way that the SGA hopes to convince the student body is through passage of the new constitution. ‘The ‘75 constitution was too strict The proposed constitution will give SGA more power and leeway and correct inconsisten cies,” said Cloer. “The Judicial Council will come back to answer questions on the constitution and as an appellate court, but most importantly, we need a constitution to make things legal and proper.” Another issue that the SGA must address this year is how student government will fight apathy at Gardner-Webb. ‘There is really nothing SGA can do about apathy except not be guilty of it,” said Cloer. “I hope we can gain the student’s trust so we can help them do things to make our school great. First we must encourage senators to hear student’s opinions and encourage students to inform their senators of their views to keep senators accountable. Secondly, we are work ing with Webnett on the possibility of airing senate meetings.” Staley Lectures prompt lively discussion wmmfmmsm. Reaction to Dr. George Schweitzer's Staley Lectures varied last week. Schweitzer attempt to reconcile scientific views with biblical accounts. For whom evolution is not a nasty word, Schweitzer's approach is invigorating and dramatic. Others find his approach offensive and disturbing. In either event, several lively discussions spun out of an unusual dimensions last week. When asked why students were not allowed to speak at the last senate meeting, Jeff Price, vice president of SGA, referred to the fact that citizens do not speak on the floor of the US Senate. Well, the office of President of the United States does not require its occupant to have participated in gov ernment at any level prior to coming to office. 6. The President of the Association may call the Senate into special sessions with proper notice. No mention ofhow long a proper notice should be was given. Article V, Executive Body; Section F; 1. The Chairman of the Student Entertainment Associa tion is the only elected member of the Association. The Chairman appoints all committee chairs and a co-chair. There is no mention as to what "Associa tion " that the chairman is to be the only elected officer of. See Article V; Section B, 2. to see how the loose use of the word “Association” could be confusing, or misleading as compared to the use of the word “Association ” in this section.
