Adrenaline junkies converge on bridge to jump 876 feet
by Kevin Walter
staff writer
Have you ever heard the saying, “If ev
eryone else jumped off a bridge, would you?”
This year about 600 people did just that, jump
ing off the New River Gorge Bridge.
A lot of people went a lot of places over
fall break. It would be a good guess to say most
of them went home. That is not what Gardner-
Webb’s own Wade Gamm did.
There is a bridge in West Virginia called
the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayettville.
Once a year two lanes of traffic over the bridge
are closed off for a day, for a event called
Bridge Day. On this day, the bridge practically
turns into a fair site.
It is said that about 80,000 people come to
see the day's events. What is the big deal?.
Well, on the bridge, a scene takes place which
you do not often see.
People spent hundreds of dollars to jump
off this one bridge in the mountains of West

Virginia. Wade was one of these people.
There were people from all over the country
who came to do the same thing. There were
people from California, and even some from
Canada.
This bridge stands an amazing 876 feet
high. Most people wouldn’t even want to look
over the edge, while Wade came to parachute
off it. This is technically called B.A.S.E.
jumping.
People often get hurt on this days activi
ties for various reasons. There were some
broken ankles and legs and a few other injuries.
Luckily this year no one got killed. There is
usually someone fatally injured.
After about a two hour wait in line Wade
finally got his turn to jump. He went up the
steps and on to the edge of the bridge. He then
turned to the crowd with his arms up stretched
and said, “ Praise God! “ He then turned and
jumped.
The officials running Bridge Day were
recommending to the parachutists that they
throw out their chute after a three second
count. Wade decided (on the way down) that
it would be more fun to fall a little longer then

Petra comes to Gardner- Webb
by Jason Farr
staff writer
If you want to see Petra, free of charge, as
well as many other top Christian performers,
tune in to Webb-Net channel 43 for the airing
of the new Christian music video show.
This new show has evolved from several
student requests for Gardner Webb’s own Chris
tian music show and the creative minds of
Greg Carpenter and Matt Costine.
"A lot of students were biinging us their
own videos to play on Webb-Net" said Webb-
Net director Wayne Johnson." That was illegal
for us to do, so we decided to make it legal."
After numerous phone calls to several
manufacturers of Christian music videos, G-
W finally received a licensing agreement to air
the videos on Webb-Net. Costine and Carpen
ter are the program's producers and Steve
Nanney serves as host.
"I like the show because it opens up a
wide range of Christian music to the students
here at Gardner Webb," said Nanney.
There is virtually no cost involved in
producing the show, just a lot of hard work.
Currently, the show has a library of 30-40
videos at its disposal, and Johnson expects to
increase that number to several hundred by the
end of the year.
"These are quality videos," said Carpen
ter. "Using music videos allows us to do an
hour show without camping out at the studio."
Future plans are in the works to air two to
three shows per week on Webb-Net and pos
sibly branch out into Cleveland County and
have the show aired on the cable networks.
The concept of the show originated from
students Carpenter and Costine of the Com
munications Department.
"We started out the year wanting to pro
duce a show," said Carpenter. "Members of
the Communications Department are very in
terested in producing shows for Webb-Nett."
"We hope the students get two things out
of this show," said Matt Costine. "One is an
enjoyable form of entertainment that is ac
ceptable to the standards of the college, and
two, we want to expose to students the differ
ent aspects of the Communications Depart
ment."
The producers hope to have enough stu
dent involvement to have guest hosts assist
Steve Nanney. If you wish to help with the
show, contact Greg Carpenter at 434-4690 or
Steve Nanney at 434-4172.
S.A.C. hosts strange
dinners
by Greg Carpenter
staff writer
On October 29, 12 strangers had dinner
together and watched Barney.
The 12 "strangers" took part in an activ
ity sponsored by the Student Alumni Council
called "Dinner With 12 Strangers."
A group of students, led by Destinee
Jones, S.A.C. ambassador, had dinner at the
home of Chris and Janet Roberts, alumni of
Gardner-Webb.
"We take 10 students and a faculty mem
ber to an alumnus’ home," said Jones.
She goes on to say that S.A.C. sponsors
the dinners so that Gardner-Webb students
can see how graduates live after college, and
the alumni get to hear all of the latest news
about Gardner-Webb from students.
After dinner, the party chatted and played
with the Roberts’ two "cute" children, Nathan
and Terra.
"We watched Barney with the little kids,"
said Destinee.
S.A.C. will be sponsoring one dinner in
November and two in December. There will
be sign-up sheets in the cafeteria if interested.
