It did not take half a semester before a few people from the Communications Department (the department, not the phone/cable system) came up with the idea of producing a show - and I, being a member of that department, was one of those people. We did not know exactly what kind of program we were going to produce; we only knew that Webb-Net is a window into every room on campus with a TV. What a stage! Anyway, when Matt Costine, my pro duction partner, became program manager at Webb-Net, he informed me that Wayne Johnson, director of Residence Life and Webb- Net, had ordered a whole mess of Christian Music Videos. I said, "I know what, let’s make a Chris tian music video show (half-joking)." The idea caught on. So here we are, announcing our arrival on the airwaves (or, more accurately, through the cable) directly into your room. What this means is that the Communica tions Department is making a crucial step in asserting its rightful place on campus. Matt and myself are learning a lot about how to work with limited space and equipment. You see, the Communications Depart ment is the runt of the litter. We are one of the youngest departments on campus. We have limited facilities (with no building to call our home) and have no active role in the radio station or, ultimately, Webb-Net Why? I do not know. Makes since to me that communications majors gain practical experience in the facilities we have. Well, we will continue to produce the video show at least, and maybe if the adminis tration has an uncommon attack of common sense, some day we might even be producing promotional videos, commercials, radio that people will listen to ... the mind reels. Reader’s Forum Responding to Dimensions letter I wanted to respond to Gus King's letter regarding Dimensions. I have always understood that the pur pose of Dimensions was to increase the aware ness of truths in the Christian faith. Hello! - we go to a Baptist-founded school. Notice that any GWU PR stresses Christian principles and values which are supposed to be upheld at this school. However, we are certainly not shel tered from the many ideas and religions of the world - via TV, newspapers, magazines, books, and peers. Sabrina Barnes First a catalyst, now a her etic On Monday, September 11, my return was acknowledged via The Pilot, on Septem ber 23, the Catalyst was self-interviewed, and finally, on October 8, "Gus on Dimensions" was released. I was recently approached by a student (a religion major) who was offended by all of my articles, especially "Gus on Dimensions" and on the announcement of my return. (I have no idea why. My return in and of itself was a cause for celebration.) Anyway, this person called my a heretic. Well, if taking a stand for what you believe in is heresy, then yes, I am heresy incarnate. Controversial and well criticized? Yes, I am because the finest steel has to go through the hottest fire. After that remark, the student walked off. I guess he did not want me to lead him astray. Or maybe he had attended one too many programs of "Dimension" (notice the missing "s"). This remark caused the young Jimmy Swaggart to confront me once more by asking me if I regretted the way in which I lead my life. My answer; One of my chief regrets in life so far is the fact that I am not able to sit back and watch myself in action. Young Jim continued by asking me who my role models were. Answer; If I had been bom Augustus King, if at all possible I would like to have been reborn Augustus King. Pretty cool huh? Do not worry future criticizers of the ubiquitous Catalyst, in the words of E. Hubbard, "If you cannot answer a man's argument with intelligence, all is not lost; you can still call him vile names." For those of you that are offended by this article, all I have to say is "THESE" (inside joke). Or you could report me to the dean, but he would probably tell you that things like this happen in the real world, so get a tough skin. I have a question for those of you who really do care. Does it not offend you that you are constantly surrounded by people who are so easily offended? This goes out to a certain coach; there's an ad in the Charlotte Observer for a little league football coach. I just figured you might want to look into it!! You know, I was just thinking we should have a gathering at the end of the season. Yeah, I think we should have a "Fish" fry. My arrogant remark for today; I cannot tell you if genius is heredity, because heaven has yet to grant me an offspring (courtesy of James McNeil Whistler) Gus King FREE BOOKS, FREE BOOKS...
