4 The Pilot /November 4 , 1993 SPORTS Men’s soccer team captures big win over Lander by Andrew Hopper sports writer The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team is on a winning streak, winning the last 6 of 7 games. The soccer team played the biggest game of the year on Saturday Oct. 23 against Lander University. The Bulldogs entered the contest as over whelming underdogs. The Runnin' Bulldog soccer team showed what it is to play with heart and not just ability. Lander University rolled onto Gardner- Webb's campus ranked third in the nation with a record of 15-0 on their sides, but that was not enough. The Bulldogs struck first with a score from Jerome Lee Yaw with an assist from Ty Richards. Later in the game, Lander tied it up, but the Bulldogs came back strong with the win ning score from Ty Richards. This game was very important to the Bulldogs because Coach Setzer is a graduate of Lander and Ty Richards transferred from Lander this past year. Sean Kelly, a junior, says, "We know we can beat everybody; it's just a matter of every one playing together." The team started off the season with a record of 2-7 but has made a u-tum to bring their record to 8-8. Kelly says, "Beating Lander helped the team realize what they could accomplish when they work together as a team." The conference tournament started Wednesday, Nov. 3, and the win over Lander should put fear in all the other coach's hearts. The Bulldogs feel very confident about their chances in winning the tournament. BULLDOGS, JUST KEEP ON KICKIN'! Gridiron woes continue for Bulldogs by Chad Maddox sports writer Gardner-Webb's battle with perennial South Atlantic Conference football power Carson-Newman was expected to go two ways: First, it would either be the Bulldog's biggest performance of the year, or secondly, it would be only the latest in a string of defeats that has turned this season into a nightmare. Carson-Newman's 47-10 victory at Spangler Stadium featured a little of both extremes. The host Bulldogs trailed 10-7 at halftime and the word upset was on the minds of many. The dream turned into a nightmare when three turnovers turned into 17 Carson-Newman points in a four minute span in the third quar ter. The 19th-ranked Eagles bent several times on defense but did not break against the Bulldog's run 'n' shoot passing game. The Bulldogs got 301 yards in the air but it took 30 completions on 58 attempts throwing often against a seven man secondary. Mix in two interceptions, plus three fumbles lost by GWU receivers after making catches, and the rout was on. The Bulldogs had their opportunities in the second period. Trailing 10-0, G-W moved 65 yards on a five-play drive that ended with Derrick Scott going 22 yards on a screen pass to cut the deficit to 10-7. On the next two series, the 'Dogs moved to the Eagles' 26 only to be foiled by a quarterback's worst nightmare - an intercep tion. The Bulldogs then had another impres sive drive only to see it end in disaster. Craven completed an 18-yard pass to Phillip Keefe inside the Eagle 20, but the Bulldog receiver coughed up the football and the Eagles recov ered the fumble. Then came the third-quarter follies. On a straight hand-off, Scott hobbled the football right into the hands of an Eagle defender to put them in business at the 2. Two plays later, the Eagles had seven more points. This made the score 17-7. Three plays after the kickoff, a Craven interception gave the Eagles the ball at the G- W 47. Carson-Newman then got in position for a 50-yard field goal and a 20-7 lead. On the ensuing. Bulldog kick returner Chuck Welch was hit and the ball was dis lodged. The Eagles recovered the ball at the G- W 5. The Eagles' quarterback scored on first down to make it a 27-7 difference. Andre Kwasnik would kick a 35-yard field goal to make it 27-10 later in the quarter but the onslaught had happened. The Bulldog defense finally fell apart when they gave up a 27-yard touchdown pass and a 66-yard jaunt before the Eagles' reserve scored a late touchdown for the final 47-10 margin. In a continuing streak of hard luck, the Bulldogs dropped yet another game Saturday, this time to Elon, making their record 1-7. Sports Quips & Quizzes Quip of the week: " This is the greatest promotion I've ever had. Michael, I love you, but I'm glad to see you go," joked Chicago Bulls forward Scottie Pippen after inheriting Michael Jordan's spacious locker in the cramped Bull's locker room. The world of sports is in for a major face lift, and 1994 will be the year of this major reconstruction. Baseball has seen the last of down to the wire pennant races. With the restructuring of both the American League and National League divisions, a playoff system will now be used to decide who goes to the Fall Classic. Basketball is in for the biggest change in the world of sports. The retirement of Michael Jordan, the announced retirement of Charles Barkley after this season, and the new salary packages available to players will be respon sible for most of the changes. Little kids will now dream of themselves imitating the likes of Larry Johnson, Shaqiulle O' Neal, and Chris Webber. I can see it now, a little kid asking the referee for a time out when he knows his team does not have any left.Go Heels’) The emergence of two new NFL teams in 1995 will add a little spark to football as know it. The Carolina Panthers have already prom ised the fans a Super Bowl by the year 2005. This gives new meaning to the phrase "I think I can." If Joe Gibbs does become their first head coach, then it is possible, but highly doubtful. Sports fans, buckle up! You could be in for the ride of your life over the next century.
