4 7//E P/L07 / September 12. 1994 SPORTS Bulldogs drop season opener ' Darrow had 14 tackles on the night. Jason Brewer and Lashan Darby each had nine tack- by Jason Farr editor The Running Bulldogs fell to Wofford College 20-14 in their season opener on Sep tember 4. Gardner-Webb struck first in the game when running back Amp Smith pounded the ball in from 5 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs took the lead into the second quarter, but two costly interceptions by John Craven and cost the Bulldogs the lead as the Wofford Terriers went up 14-7 going into halftime. At the start of the second half, the Bull dogs drove the length of the field only to turn the ball over on an interception. The Wofford team capitalized on the turnover and added a field goal to stretch their lead to 17-7. Gardner-Webb got some help from its special teams late in the third quarter when punt returner Terry Guess returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown. This cut the Wofford College lead to 17-14 going into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs got a big defensive stand to start the final quarter. Defensive player Mike les. Wofford added another field goal to ex tend their lead to 6 with less than five minutes to play in the game. With 3:00 left in the game, the Bulldog defense came up with a big interception to give GWU one last shot at scoring the go-ahead touchdown. The Bulldog offense drove the length of the field, and when it seemed as though a touchdown was imminent, quarterback John Craven threw his sixth interception of the night to stop the drive. Wofford then pro ceeded to run out the clock and win the game 20-14. It was not a typical night for John Craven. He was 18-40, with 180 yards passing, no touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Bulldogs leading receivers were Cory West (3 catches for 31 yards). Shed Harris (2 catches for 47 yards) and Britt Phillips (3 catches for 26 yards). The Bulldogs’ next game will be an away game Saturday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. at UT-Chattanooga.
