The Pilot / October 14,1994 3 AROUND CAMPUS // ~—r Faculty Spotlight Faculty Spotlight introduces you to a fac ulty member at GardnCT-Webb each issue. Janet Land: English Reggie Hunt staff writer Dr. Janet Land is one of the new faculty mem bers at Gardner-Webb this year. Professor Land teaches English composition and literature. Why GardnCT-Webb? ‘‘It was a chance to teach full time.. .1 also like the small classes here.” Professor Land didn't bring along any chick ens. Instead, she brought her two sons, ages 14 and 9. “The boys were a little apprehensive about moving here, but now they're getting used to it,” she said. Janet Land and her husband are from Lenoir, North Carolina; therefore, she is accustomed to the rural atmosphere of Boiling Springs. She moved here from Greenville, South Carolina, where she taught at Winder University in Green wood. She has also taught at Midland Technical College in Columbia. Already Professor Land has accomplished some of the goals she set for herself when she be gan teaching. “I wanted to get my degrees, get some ex perience and find a full-time teaching job. My goal for the future is to settle in here at this job.” Professor Land is only in her first year at Gardner-Webb, but she wants the reputation as a rigorous teacher. “I want the students to see me as someone who works them and insists on their best ef forts. I want to be seen as someone who is fair about grading procedures.” CAREEIR DAY Friday, October 14 10 am - 2 pm Businesses Coming; ♦Shelby City Schools ♦Christian Counseling ♦Gov't Internships ♦Libmy Data Systems ♦Journalism ♦and many more... All Majors Welcome! Students look for quality in church services by Janies Sexton staff writer For some, finding a church while here at Gardner-Webb is hard. But for many, finding a church to attend has been successful. Some stu dents have part-time jobs working at local churches, some have just mixed themselves into the congregation of a local church, and others just go from one church to anothCT each Sunday. Most G-W students who plan to go into the ministry have either jobs or internships at local churches. For example, Jonathan Jones is the Min ister of Youth and Children at Oak Grove Baptist Church in King's Mountain. This job is sometimes time consuming, but enjoyable for him. “I spend about 10-15 hours a week on my job. It's something I enjoy doing. I probably won't do it all my life but right now I enjoy it very much,” said Jones. Not all G-W students, however, go to church because they work there. Bobby Hockett was the Minister of Youth and Children this past summer at Goucher Memorial Baptist Church in Gaffney, SC. Though he is no longer employed at the church, he still attends regularly. “It’s like a home church to me. I love it there. But now I go for worship instead of to lead in worship,” said Bobby. What is it that attracts students to one par ticular church? Most students look for good bibli cal knowledge from the pastor and a comfortable atmosphere within the congregation. “I wanted to find a sincere pastor, good fel lowship and a good worship service,” said Allen Wright. Like many G-W students, Wright attends Grace Fellowship in Shelby, NC. “I like Grace Fellowship because the bibli cal doctrine is similar to that 1 am accustomed to. Its warm and friendly atmosphere goes great with its active college and career program,” said Frank Shelton. Billy Griffin attends Grace but also likes to Christ Covenant Church here on campus. “They both have love, atmosphere, and effective Bible teaching,” Billy said. Gospel choir lifts voices in praise by Tonya Cochran staff writer “I think the choir did an awesome job,” was one student's response to the performance of the GWU gospel choir during Parent's Weekend. The GWU gospel choir has begun a new year of making a joyful noise. Many changes have been made to the overall program. One of the most im portant changes has been the addition of Renee Ellis as the choir's new director. “I am just so excited,” is all Ellis could say when asked how she felt about the choir. Currently, there are 25 choir members and the door remains open for anyone desiring to be a part of this ministry. Tryouts are not required. “Anyone is welcome to join the gospel choir,” Ellis said. “We just want people who love the Lord.” The choir has many plans for its immediate “We plan to go out to different churches in the community. Not just African-American churches, but all typ^ of churches in our com munity.” Renee Ellis, director future including a concert tour, several on-cam- pus performances and a possible album. “We plan to go out to different churches in the community, not just African-American churches, but all types of churches in our commu nity,” Ellis said. The president of the choir is Sharon Surran. vice president is Andre Cooley, and the secretary is Sonya Norman. John Miller serves as chaplain. The choir meets every Thursday night at 6 pm in Dover Chapel. If you would like more in formation, contact Renee Ellis in the Residence Life office. ♦♦♦SPRING BREAK 95*** America's #1 Spring Break Company Cancun, Bahamas, Daytona & Panama! 110% Lowest Price Guarantee!
