2 The Pilot ! Vehmsry 14,1995 KDTTORTAL page Maintenance needs maintenance Many students believe that maintenance is slack CaidneF-Wd>b University THE PILOT Campus Box 5384 Phone ext 4145 Jason Farr Michael Owens Editor Editor June Hobbs Advisor Staff Rebekah Cloninger, Wendy Davidson, Brandy Fought. Michelle Hill, Reggie Hunt, Julianne Kuykendall, Nikol McKinney, Jay Pass, Jeff Price, Jill Self, Ryan West Intramurals just a game? Intramural basketball has been and con tinues to be a big thing on our campus. Around November, teams begin assanbling and prac ticing in hopes to be crowned Intramural Bas- ketbaU Champions. Basketb^ is a great sport to participate in and it is very fun to watch. However, one thing really bothers me about the sportsman ship that is evident at Host Gym during re cent intramural games. First of all, participants need to re^ze that this is just a game. Sure, it is nice to win, but winning isn't everything. Remember, you are playing against your peers and they want to win just as badly as you do. It is important to keep the game in perspective. Win or lose, you'll still wake up in the morning. Sec(xidly, ttie referees and tiie sc(»ekeep- ers are students as well. Do not try to put them in an awkward situation. Sure, they make mis takes, but they’re not professionals and we Wouldn't expect them to act like them. Some calls are going to be missed; some bad calls will be made. Learn to live with it After all, haven't you ever made a mistake? Finally, it's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. Keep trash talk ing to a minimum. Many people don't want to hear the foul language. If everyone will adhere to these guidelines, then the real cham pion will be crowned. GO SILKY SMOOTH! Jason Farr, editor by Michael Owens editor Without question one of the most fre quent targets of criticism is maintenance of the physical plant here at Gardner-Webb. Such negative comments, although they are fre quent, are not unfounded. Take the dorms. I live on the second floor of Lutz-Yelton. We were told before exams in the fall that our showers would be shut down to facilitate some long-needed repairs. The problem was that the showers on second floor were leaking on residents of the first floor. When first floor residents complained to the Cleveland County Health Department, people finally started to act Second floor resi dents were told that the work would begin during exam week and we should prepare to go to other floors to shower. Work, we were told, should be complete upon our return from the holidays, or shortly thereafter. It was no surprise when I got back from the break, three and a half weeks later, to see the lack, of progress. Maintenance had suc ceeded in removing the urinals and tile in the shower floor, and this minimal amount of work was done two to three days before students returned for the spring semester. It was more than two weeks after we got back that mainte nance ventured back into our bathroom to do Spedal to The Pilot Valerie Parry and the library staff thank the students who completed our library sur vey. AH those who returned a completed ques tionnaire by January 20 received a new copy card with 25 copies, and if the student already had a copy card, 35 copies were added to those. If you are one of these students, just stop by the circulation desk with your ID to receive your card. Congratulations to our special winners: any woik again. At this writing, showers have yet to be completed. We have been told about lack of parts and other technical difficulties by ad ministrators. It has been approximately eight weeks now since work was to have begun... my how time flies! Some might see this as an isolated problem; Aucontraire! Consider the residents on second floor Stroup. They reported to maintenance that their shower ceiling leaked as well. Maintenance responded by patching the ceiling. Now, both water and patchwork fall from the ceiling. Their problems don’t stop there. Hair gets lodged in the drains of the showers and tubs and the water backs up; hence a shower ing student stands in everyone else’s bath wa ter. The problem, however, is not with stu dent hygiene. The hair cannot be simply wiped up as it gets down in the drain. The drain must be opened and cleaned. After multiple reports, maintenance finally came out and fixed the problem. Unfortunately this process needs to be repeated on a regular basis, and that seems to be a problem. If maintenance isn’t over loaded with calls, they don’t perceive any problems. So what is the problem around here? Is it aging facilities and necessary repairs, or is it maintenance? Adam Brugner, who won a copy card with 100 copies; TV Richards, who won lunch for 3 at the Uptown Cafe or a credit of $25 at the cam pus bookstore; and \^ckie Saine, who won a $40 campus bookstore credit Happy Birthday Dr. Hobbs! The Pilot staff would like to wish you a happy birthday and thank you for all the hard work and dedication you have given us this year.
