8 The Pilot I M?Ly 1, 1995 'i''''' / * "j',' Bobby Lutz named men’s basketball coach Special to The Pilot Gardner-Webb University named Bobby Lutz as its new men's basketball coach during a press conference on the Gardner-Webb campus. Lutz, who led Pfeiffer College to the NAIA National Championship game in March, had com plied a 181-91 record at Pfeiffer during his nine- year tenure at the school. Over the last five years, he amassed a 131-29 record (81.9 winning per centage) while earning three Carolinas’ Conference "Coach of the Year" awards. Additionally, he led Pfeiffer to six consecutive NAIA Tournament ap pearances. Gardner-Webb President Dr. Chris White hailed Lutz for building a national power at Pfeiffer while maintaining his focus on academics. Lutz recruited thirty-seven student-athletes while at Pfeiffer, thirty of which have graduated or are scheduled to graduate. "Bobby exemplifies what every school is looking for in a head coach," White said. "Through talking with him, I learned that he is a very intelli gent man who values intelligence in his players. His association with Gardner-Webb will be a great asset to us." Coach Lutz speaks at a press conference in the LYCC. Many special guests Paul Porter, of which the Paul Porter Arena is named, and Eddie Holbrook were there to hear the announcement. Gardner-Webb officials echoed White's com ments by noting that Lutz met all the criteria the school had set for its next basketball coach. "From the beginning of our search, we were looking for someone who had attained consistent success at a comparable level," said GWU Ath letic Director Ozzie McFarland. "We were very impressed with his philosophies on and off the court in regard to athletics, academics, commu nity and church involvement." Abiding in His Love, Tina Duncan ball Coach Eddie Holbrook, now a member of the University RelaUons staff at GWU, described Lutz as the ideal candidate for the Bulldogs coaching position. "There is so much that impresses me about Bobby," Holbrook explained. "Basketball aside, one look at his resume shows you that you're not dealing with just an average person here. Every thing he has encountered in life, he has succeeded." Lutz holds a bachelor's degree fi"om UNC- Charlotte and achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average while obtaining two master's degrees from Winthrop College and Clemson University. He and his wife, Janet, have two daughters, Natalie and Christine. Other professional highlights for Lutz in clude serving as an assistant coach to Cliff Ellis at Clemson University from 1984-1986, and coach ing Antonio Harvey, who has been a member of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers since 1993 and who participated in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest dur ing this year's All-Star weekend festivities. Bobby Lutz becomes the fourth men's bas ketball head coach at Gardner-Webb in the last 25 years of competition as a four-year institution.
