This idea originated with Dr. Les Brown and has become a central focus in planning for next year. There is already in existence a steering committee that seeks to implement ideas that might promote individual and corporate scholarship throughout the student body. Several faculty members including Dr. Janet Land and Dr. June Hobbs have already discussed the idea with students, and thus far reaction has been up beat and positive. What then, will all of this discussion lead to? Hopefully it will do several things for the University. Although specific plans are not yet in existence, the creation of a place, such as a "coffee-house", where students might be able to share and discuss different issues and topics is a possibility. Where's that guy at DIMENSIONS? by Janet Jones contributing writer Other ideas suggested have included: a student debate, bringing renowned speakers on campus to promote scholarship, more personal teacher/student involvement outside of class, and an approach to teaching that shows the linkage of disciplines to one another. On February 7, an informal meeting was held that included faculty, administration, and students. The time was spent explaining the idea to the group, brainstorming, and getting student reaction. Those students who were present were encouraged and very positive about the plans. Discussion moderator Les Brown noted that without student support any plans or actions will not be successful. Some students also noted that because of the increasing number of applicants to the University, Admissions has been able to be much more selective, bringing in ahigher caliber of student. As faculty and administration are excited about the prospect of the "Year of the Scholar," student input and reaction is important. Students are encouraged to discuss the idea with faculty; to ask questions and express opinions. Update from Student Entertainment by Matt Elliott Staff writer Because of the snow that extended the Christmas break, two SEA (Student Entertainment Association) sponsored events were postponed. The illusionist, Craig Karnes, was rescheduled for Sunday, February 18. Laser Storm will hopefully be rescheduled for Welcome Back week in the fall. SEA will also be sponsoring a coffee house once each Tuesday in the cafeteria. The format will feature an "open mike" in the cafeteria on each Tuesday night at dinner from 5.00 until 6:30. The Spring Formal is scheduled for Saturday, April 27. At DIMENSIONS each week, some students seem to be wondering where the Student Entertainment chair, Scott Elliott, is. The mystery is now over. Elliott resigned his position as SEA chair, on November 14, 1995. \ Elliott gave several reasons for his resignation. First, he stated that the job was very stressful and often interfered with school work. "Even though I tried not to let it [get in the way], it did anyway," Elliot said. He went further to say, "The stress began to affect my personal life; however, there were other, more significant reasons for my resignation." Elliott claimed that as chair of SEA, "you take a lot of flack from students." He went on to attribute that to the diversity of students on campus. Snow makes for beautiful scences at GWU.
