anything like this to happen," said Sidney Wilkey, a
32 year old alumnus of Gardner-Webb who has been
selected to carry the Olympic torch this summer.
Wilkey was nominated bycause of his volunteer
work within the community. He offers his services to
the Red Cross, Shanghi Fire Department, and the
Cleveland County Fire Fighters Association. The
individual who nominated Wilkey has requested to

Students in the

Gardner-Webb seniors Crys Baker and Clint
Calhoun presented summer research papers at the
Collegiate Academy of the North Carolina Academy
of Science at Wake Forest University in Winston-
Salem, NC, March 23.
Baker's paper, entitled "TheCourtship Behavior
of the Arctiid Moth" is a result of her summer
research conducted this past summer at Wake Forest
University.
Baker, a biology major from Angier, NC, who
plans to enter medical school at East Carolina in the
fall, studied the courtship patterns of the arctiid moth.
"I got into this as kind of a fluke," Baker said.
"It was interesting research. It was exciting, frustrating
and exhilarating all at one time. That kind of research
had never been done before, so that was exciting."
Calhoun, a native of Rutherfordton who finished
undergraduate work in December, conducted his
research at Chimney Rock Park. His paper deals
with lichens as indicators for air pollutants.
Election '96 - What the candidates are saying
by Matt Elliot
Staff writer
The following quotes were taken from speeches
made by candidates for Student Government offices.
These are direct quotes, and no changes have been
made to favor any candidate.
SEA CHAIR:
Kim McVeigh ^
"My main goal is to bring diversity to the
entertainement on cart^)us. There hasn't been much
diversity in the past. We want to start bringing the
entertainment you want to see to this campus, but we
can't do that if you don't voice your opinions. Without
your support and constant involement, we cannot
bring what you would like to see to Gardner-Webb."
SGA TREASURER:
Kelly Greene
"My goal as treasurer will be to have you guys
informed. Everyone says they want your suggestions
and they can't work if you don't give them suggestions.
Well, the only way theat you can give suggestions is
if you know what is going on ahead of time. I want
you all to know where your money is going. Also,
remember the treasurer is on the executive council
and gets a vote in the Senate. Remeber whey you're
voting to vote for someone you want representing
you.
Cone Lewis
"I decided to run for treasurer not because it is
going to look good on my records and not because it
will put me in a high position. I want to do it because
I want to made Gardner-Webb better. We pay money
to go here. If you're not happy, what's the point in
paying money to go here? I want you guys to be able
to talk to me and I'm going to do my best to fix the
things you want me to fix. Vote for the candidate who
you think is the best for you."
SECRETARY:
Brandy Faught
"We're supposed to be here to tell you why
we're a good candidate for the job. I'm a good
candidate because I'm the only candidate. But I want
you to know a little about me so you won't think that
because I'm the only candidate, I'm not a good choice.
I've been in SGA for the past two years. I've served
as treasurer for the last year. One of the goals I have
next year is to make SGA more visible and make
what we do more visible to you."
VICE-PRESIDENT:
Amanda Williams
"I want to encourage you all to get involved
next year. I know every student has an interest in at
least some part of this campus. I want to encourage
each of you to take one thing that is important to you
at GWU and get involved to make it better. It only
takes one person with one idea to make a difference.
I served as SGA secretary this year. I have two years
of experience on Senate. I look forward to next year
and encourage you all to get involved.
PRESIDENT:
Jason Farr
"As SGA president I want to do what it is that
you want to do. There are three issues I want to key
inon. The first is the cafeteria food. I feel as a student
at GWU, you should have a choice to choose how big
of a cafeteria meal plan you want. Whether it is 21
meals a week, 14 meals a week, or 10 meals a week,
you should have that choice. Secondly, parking on
this campus is a serious problem. There are 799
marked, paved parking spaces on this campus, but
there are 960 registered vehicles on this campus. We
need more parking. Finally, I feel you should be able
to choose whether or not you live on campus even if
you aren't 21 years old or a senior."
Michael Mustian
"There are a lot of things that can be changed if
we only work for it. I'm not a politician. I'm just me.
I'm not going to put on an act to get your vote. There
are a lot of things here at Gardner-Webb that we can
change. We can be better students and a better
imiversity. But we've got to work together. Vote for
Mike for SGA President."
Josh Wall
"I know there is a lot of division on our campus.
People want to point fingers and be divided. What we
need to do is come together and be unified, because
unity is the key. One problem on this campus is
health care. Every time someone gets hurt, they have
to run up to the hospital. There ought to be an
infirmary on this campus. Another problem is housing.
We ought to be able to go to our rooms and not have
paint chipping off the walls and things leaking down.
Students should be involved. Students make a
difference. Unity is the key."
Make sure YOU vote!
