How about those lady Bulldogs! by Carlton Hurt sports editor The Lady Bulldog basketball team ended the season recently, losing to Wingate 84-78 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. This season was, however, a season of accomplishment and achievement for the ladies and for first-year coach Eddie McCurley. Take a look at what the Lady Bulldog team did this season: -Finished the season 22-7, with the 22 wins setting a school record. -Ended the conference season at 10-4 and in second place. -Went undefeated at home, 11-0, which has never been done before in school history. -Competed in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time. “ I really didn’t know what to expect coming into this season. I wasn’t sure how strong this conference was, and I knew some of the new players we brought in would have to play important roles. But this team gelled quickly,” McCurley explained. “ I’m obviously pleased with the success we have had this season,” McCurley noted. The team will say goodbye to Ashley Goodman, Delaina Adams and Kim Houser, three seniors who showed great leadership according to McCurley. However, Gardner-Webb returns three starters as well as a deep bench which contributed heavily to the success of this year’s team. So what does this team do next year for an encore? “ We just hope to continue improving and we want to compete on a national level year in and year out,” McCurley stated. Congratulations to Coach McCurley and the team on a great season.
