GWU to break enrollment record
by Karen Brower
co-editor
Gardner-Webb will have another record-
breaking enrollment next fall, following a
trend set for the past three years, said John
Brock, vice president for marketing.
Fall 1996 total enrollment hit an all-time
high at 2,768 students, with Spring 1997
enrollment just behind it. Fall 1996
enrollment was 10 percent higher than any
other in the past.
"Our growth has been across the board,"
Brock said. The GOAL program reached
record enrollment at 968, and will climb to
over 1,000 this fall.
Admissions goals for the fall include
recruiting over 600 first-time undergraduate
admissions, Director of Admissions Ray
Hardee said. The most highly recruited states
include North Carolina, South Carolina and
Virginia, followed by Georgia, Florida,
Tennessee and Maryland.
Total enrollment is expected to grow to
over 3,000 by this fall, making for a 30
percent increase over the past three years,

Registration process to be simplified
by Julie Gibson
staff writer
Starting this semester Gardner-Webb has
a new procedure that will allow students to get
advised and registered in one step.
The first thing students need to do is
make an appointment with their advisors by
following the schedule below, according to
the Registrar's Office. The adviser will call
the registrar after the student has been
advised, and the schedule will be entered in
the computer.
Dean of Advising and Registration
Melvin Lutz urges students to have an
alternative schedule in case some classes are
full.
The drop/add period has also changed.
The period begins on Monday, July 7, and
goes through Thursday, Aug. 7. If students
want to drop/add classes, they can call the
Registrar during the above dates and
drop/add by phone.
Students must clear the Business Office
before calling in a drop/add. Satisfactory
financial arrangements must also be made by
Aug. 1 to secure fall registration schedules,
Dean Lutz said.
When students return from summer
break all they will need to do is check in.
They will receive a packet which will include
their schedule. They must make sure every
thing is in order, Registrar Stephen Sain said.
The registration schedule for the fall
semester is as follows.
Class Date to phone in
March 18-21
March 24-27
March 28, April 1-4,7
April 8-11, 14-17
Seniors
Juniors
Sophomores
Freshmen
The new registration procedure is "a step
in the direction of an automated service and it
is a significant step in the right direction,"
Lutz said.

Gardner-Webb to add
weekday visitation
by Nic Floyd
staff writer
A trial run of weekday visitation might
be tested by the end of February and continue
through the rest of the semester, according to
Dean of Student Development Bruce Moore.
"The Board of Trustees has given us
permission to play with the visitation policy,"
said Moore. Under Moore's proposal,
students will be given visitation Monday
through Thursday from 3-10 p.m. In aHHition
to increasing visitation, Moore wants to do
away with the six-inch rule which requires
students to leave their door open six inches
when they have a visitor of the opposite sex.
"With more freedom comes more
responsibility," Moore said. If they want to
visit a member of the opposite sex, students
will have to sign in and leave their ID with a
Residence Hall Council member. If a council
member is not on duty, then that dorm will not
have visitation, said Moore.
