1905 Gardner-Wehh University THE PILOT October 8, 1997 Issue #4 The Official Campus Newspaper Boiling Springs, NC Recent graduates just can’t get enough of the Web by Justin Hutto staff writer Most people have the conception that college students go far, far away from their alma mater after graduation. But several 1997 Gardner-Webb graduates have proven this assumption wrong. Tim Chilton, after receiving his bachelor's degree in History at GWU, has returned as an admissions counselor. He is currently promoting the university at various high schools and college fairs throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Kendra Haneline, known through much of her college career as Kendra Kirby, was employed as Secretary to the President after receiving a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Haneline sees her job as a learning experience: "I came back because I wanted to stay with the university and see how Gardner-Webb really works." Michael Mustian, graduate of the Religious Studies Department, has become Michael J. Mustian, Assistant to the President, and student at Gardner- Webb's School of Divinity. He sees his employment at GWU as a great opportunity, not only for himself, but for his fellow students. "I want to be a resource for the students," said Mustian. "I want to help. That's what we (the administration) are here for." Mark Raub, Executive Director of the Bulldog Club, graduated in August, 1997, with master's degree in Physical Education. He is the first full-time director the Bulldog Club has ever had. The Bulldog Club is the official athletic fund-raising organization of Gardner- Webb. Raub says he decided to work for Gardner-Webb because of spiritual and emotional reasons. "I really believe in their (Gardner-Webb's) philosophy and mission," he said. Darlene Broadhurst graduated from GWU with a major in Business Administration and is now Director of the Annual Fund, a major fund-raising force for the university. See "Graduates " on page 2 I AMANDA WILLIAMS/staff Secretary to the President Kendra Haneline and Assistant to the President Michael Mustian discuss the day's plans. Haneline and Mustian are just two recent GWU graduates who have found jobs at the university. GWU representatives traveled to Washington, D.C., two weeks ago to receive recognition for being named to the Templeton Foundation's Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges and Universities. On Sept. 24, John Templeton, Jr, president of the foundation, and Lamar Alexander, former tJ.S. secretary of education, presented the award to President Chris White and Provost Dr. Frank Bonner. "We are pleased to name Gardner- Webb University to our Honor Roll because of demonstrated efforts to develop habits of heart, mind and spirit that help students know, love and do good," 'Templeton said. Thousands of colleges and universities submitted essays in hopes of receiving this honor; however, only 135 schools were named to the Honor Roll. In this issue Homecoming Events page 3 GWU Sports pages 5-6 Applying colleges and universities are judged on whether its institution encourages moral reasoning skills and spiritual growth, provides community- building experiences, encourages a drug- free lifestyle and has character-building programs and activities, according to our website at www.gardner-webb.edu. It is such an honor for Gardner-Webb to receive this award because it is "very selective," President White said. All the colleges and universities chosen are listed in a book that will be given to "public libraries, high schools, and to interested parents and prospective students," according to the website. The Templeton Foundation is a national organization, making it a "highly-respected foundation," said President White. "For a national foundation to certify that we actually do what we-say is a major commendation," he said. Not only is Gardner-Webb included in the book, but the university is also pictured on the front cover. Arts & Entertainment pages
