Math, science, nursing departments receive additions by Shannon Spencer staff writer With the rise in the number of students this year therewas an obvious need for more professors. For the math department the new addition is Dr. Patrick Cannup, assistant professor. He is originally from Clemmons, N.C., and received his Bachelor and Master degrees from North Carolina State University. Cannup graduated in June with his Ph.D. from Stanford University. His focus was in engineering, more specific ally aerospace engineering., which involved in building vehicles that fly. This is Cannup's first job and he seems excited to be here. He was "looking for a Christian environment" and a institution that "focused on teaching." Gardner- Webb seemed just the place. Cannup was also anxious to get out of the "congestion" of the bay area in Cal ifornia, Stanford University's location. "I was looking for an environment that was nestled in the country," he said. Other faculty members tease Cannup for being the youngest professor at the university. They say they will build a sand box outside of the Withrow building for him to play in. Cannup enjoys growing camivor-ous plants, in-line skating and biking His newest hobby is training his mischievous partial Labrador puppy. One thing Cannup wants his students to know it was that "mathmetics can be your friend," he said. Dr. Timothy Zehnder is the assistant professor of biology. He received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University, his Master's degree from Wake Forrest University and his Ph.D. from The Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. Zehnder had been teaching in the G.O.A.L. program. He previously taught at Wake Forrest University and Winston- Salem State University. He and his wife "really felt God wanted us to be here." It was a "divine calling," he said. Zehnder said he wanted to find a place where he could share his faith freely. He chose Gardner-Webb for many reasons. "The teachers care and the people are real friendly," he said. GWU also emphasizes teaching and has high standards, he said. Zehnder enjoys taking walks , biking and watching college basketball. Zehnder want his students to know that "my door is open and feel free to come see me." Ms. Virginia L. Sullivan, Instructor in Nursing, also joins GWU. She teaches at the satellite campus in Charlotte.
