Page 6 The Pilot / Oct. 22 Runnin' BulldoQ Sports Volleyball team spiking the competition Sports Talk Hey gang, and welcome to this edition of Sports Talk. I'm your host Randy Capps. My partner-in-crime Takiya Patrick and I would like to say that we hop>e you've had a nice, restful Fall Break. We had to work. This stuff doesn't write itself. Anyway, let’s take a call. Hey Randy, this is Lucas from Lawndale. Stop your complaining and tell me who's going to win the World Series. To tell you the truth, I ahnost don't care. My boys, the Baltimore Orioles couldn't buy a clutch hit against the Indians, while the Braves did what they usually do in the postseason—which is fold like a cheap tent. This year, it just came one series earlier. Oh well, I guess I have to pick a winner. It's my job, so let’s go with the Indians. I m picking Cleveland for one reason— they are in the Fall Classic without Albert Belle. The moody slugger took his bad attitude and big numbers to Chicago, and the sun still came up in Cleveland. It's a nice lesson. Next please. Hey dude, this is HoUy from downtown Hildebrain. I'm a Cowboys fan, so what's up with my team? First of all, as a Redskins fan, let me say HA! 21-16 Skins on Monday Night Football. You gotta love us! Anyway, here's the scoop on the 'Boys. Let's start on the offensive line. Those guys aren't getting any younger. So the giant holes Emmitt Smith is used to seeing aren't there and Troy Aikman is getting hammered on passing downs. Most importantly, Barry Switzer can't coach. I’m not one of those throw it all on the coach types, but this team hasn't updated the playbook since the Jimmy Johnson era. Let’s just say that the rest of the league has caught on. Bottom line—Dallas needs a new coach and some younger talent on the line in a hurry. After all, Troy and Emmitt won't be around forever. All right, let's try something new. ; Somebody toss Takiya a campus sports question. Hey Takiya. My name is Jay. I want to know what you thought about Bulldog Madness. And while your at it, what's your take on this year's team? Well, Jay. I thought Bulldog Madness was okay. Hopefully it was a preview of things to come. I can't wait to see these guys in action. Even though the loss of Bo Graves will hurt, I think the new talent will still provide plenty of excitement. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Jermel Perry. From what I saw at Bulldog Madness, he'll most definitely heat up the court this year. All in all, I think this team has the ingredients for a successfiil season. Thanks TP and thank you, our loyal readers. Until next time, play a sport and hug your local sportswriter! by Takiya Patrick staff writer Detsiny may be wearing a red and black jersey this season. The Lady Bulldog Volleyball is 19-3 on the season They also have a 9-1 South Atlantic Conference mark, which is good for first place. The school record for victories is 27, set by last year's squad. With the steady play of this year's team, that record is in serious danger. Coach Angell Kirkpatrick and her Lady Bulldogs are also in search of Gardner- Webb's first-ever SAC volleyball championship. This year's postseason tournament will be decided in Paul Porter Arena, as Gardner-Webb will host the event on November 14-15. But this team is not looking ahead to the conference tournament, after all they have a winning streak to keep alive. Since falling on the road against Mars Hill on September 23, the Lady Bulldogs have won seven straight matches, including several all-important conference matchups. In three of their last four matches, Gardner-Webb has won 3-0, not dropping a game. On Oct. 8, the ladies traveled to Anderson College for a non-conference match. GWU won easily 3-0, behind ten kills from senior Kathy Smith. Smith, a Lincolnton, NC native, was named SAC Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 6-13. Smith is currently ranked second in the league in blocks and fourth in the kills Pilot Sports Top Five L Penn State Nittany Lions (6) 30 pts 2. Florida State Seminoles 23 pts 3. Nebraska Comhuskers 20 pts 4. Florida Gators 19 pts 5. North Carolina Tarheels 17 pts Hey, finally a little change in the poll, rhe Gators fall from the top spot after a 28-21 loss on the road to LSU. Penn State is our new number one after a 31-27 win over Ohio State. It's nice to see they can beat good teams. Florida State had no trouble with Duke while North Carolina continued their trademark play this season with a win aver a much improved Wake Forest ;quad. Let's just say that winning ugly is 2n vogue in Chapel Hill. Nebraska is cruising through the Big 12 on their way to an alliance bowl bid md a possible shot at the national title. Penn State is in the driver's seat for a Rose Bowl bid, with only a matchup with the Michigan Wolverines standing in their way. Thanks for vdting^iand^sdeyoti later! TU T ^ o iij Ridiie EUlswi/staff I he Lady Bulldogs work hard to win this point in a match against Mars Hill. Coach Angell irkpatnck s squad is havingthe best season in school history as they prepare to host the South Atlantic Conference tournament on November 14-15. But by no means is this a one-woman show. Veterans Tracy Schroeder and Heather Hauser, as well as newcomers Linette Ramsuer and Trisha Beatty have all had solid seasons for Coach Kirkpatrick's squad. The Lady Bulldogs will host Carson- Newman on Oct.22 and Mars Hill on Oct. 24 before going on the road to face Newberry and Presbyterian the following week. Volleyball doesn't get much attention at most schools, but Coach Kirkpatrick and her Lady Bulldogs are forcing people to stand up and take notice. Interested in Sports? The Lady Bulldogs are 6-7 overall, with a conference mark of 3-2. This squad has had it's problems on the road, as their only significant road win this season was a 2-1 decision over Belmont Abbey. Freshman Erin Rintoul provided the offense with two goals for GWU. Injuries have been a problem for Coach Charles' team as well, as several players have been missing in action lately. The ladies have handled this adversity pretty well. “The seniors have really been stepping up and leading more,” Charles said. Coach Charles is hoping to have everyone healthy in time for the South Atlantic Conference tournament on November 5-9. If this group can recover from injuries, they may sneak up on some people in the postseason. Runnin' Bulldog Football GWU vs. #1 Carson-Newman Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m. Be There! \Uin t;:
