Sports Talk Hey kids, and welcome to this edition of Sports Talk, rm your host, Randy Capps-and joining me once again is my partner-in-crime Takiya Patrick. Let's kick it. Hey, Randy. This is Wendy from Wendy Gap. I really like college football. You're kidding! No, I really do. Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't like sports. You’re absolutely right. Now, go ahead and ask your question. Okay. There arc so many good college games this weekend, how do you think they'll turn out? Your right about the games tliis weekend -- it's the biggest weekend of the season so far. By Saturday night, the race for the national title may have some new leaders. There are two main games. Li the Big Ten, #2 Penn State hosts #4 Michigiui; while in the ACC, #3 Rorida State travels to Chapel Hill to face ff5 NortJi Carolina. Let's break them down. Penn State has been holding on for dear life this season in several close games. To their credit, they are unbeaten. They're also overrated. Michigan's defense will be too much for the Nittany Lions to handle. My pick: Michigan wins a close one, 21-17. Oh, man -- this is probably the biggest game in North Carolina's history that doesn't involve Dean Smith. Could this finally be the year that someone besides FSU wins the ACC prown? Nope. The Tarheels have not exaclty been impressive this season, and the big- game hype for this matchup will leave Uiem even flatter than usual. My pick: Rorida State wins 28-17. Whew! Tm going to grab a soda. It's time for Takiya to tackle a campus sports question. Who has one? HI, Takiya. This is TrcnL Tell me, what has been the hottest sport on campus this fall? Well Trent, the two words that seem to fall from everyone's lips these days are Women's Volleyball. That would be my pick. True, the football team is doing pretty well, and the soccer teams have been making some noise, but the Lady Bulldogs have shown what they're made of all season long. If you were at the game on Friday, Oct, 24, you know what kind of support the ladies have been getting. There, were 1,200 people at this match. That's only about 700 short of the attendance at our last football game! Well, they have my support, too. I think they're going to bring home the South Atlantic Conference title this year. Tliey have the talent to do it. I suggest that you take a long look at the Lady Bulldogs in action during the SAC Tournament on Nov. 13-15 and youll see why they are the hottest ticket at Gardner-Webb this fall. Thanks, TP. We’re out of space. See ya! by Randy Capps sports editor Tlie Runnin' Bulldog football team celebrated Halloween a day late as tliey had plenty of tricks for Tusculum and treats for the fans in a 66-6 rout of the Pioneers. After consecutive losses to Catawba and Carson-Newman, Gardner-Webb (6- 3, 2-3 SAC) bounced back in a big way against Tusculum (1-8). It didn't take very long for tlie Dawgs to take control of the game, as witJi just 29 seconds gone in the first quarter, Tim Sullivan intercepted a pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown. GWU would lead 10-0 before the Pioneers scored to cut tlie lead to 10-6. It never got any closer as the Bulldogs ran off 56 unanswered points against tlie Pioneers at Spangler Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Clint Conner had a big day, completing 14 out of 20 passes for 2^ yards and tliree scores. Backup quarterbacks Carlton Hurt and Mike McKay also saw action. Eric Harris tallied the other two receving touchdowns, including a hail- mary pass to end the first half. Tlie rushing attack was impressive as well, as GWU piled up 361 yards on the ground. Amos Myles led tlie way with 134 yards on nine carries. Myles also had two scoring runs; tlie first one was from one yard, the other was a bit farther. In the fourtli quarter, Myles scored from 90 yards out, setting a school by Takiya Patnck staff writer The Lady Bulldog volleyball teiun has made history. Witli a win over Presbyteritui College on Oct. 29, GWU won its first-ever South Atlantic Conference regular season title. Tlie battle is only half over The 1997 SAC Volleyball Tournament will be held at Paul Porter Arena on Nov. 13-15. GWU will enter tlie event as tlie number one seed. The success of Coach Angell KirkpaU'ick's squad has been a teini effort. Tlie Lady Bulldogs ive riuiked fifth nationally in hitting percent;ige and si.\tli in blocks. Lidividually, Kathy Smith, Heather Hauser, Linette Ramseur, Tracy Schroeder and Trisha Beatty have all been outstanding for Gardner-Webb tliis fall. The Lady Bulldogs finished the year with a 26-7 record overall, as well as a near-perfect 13-1 conference mark. On Oct. 22, die ladies played host to record for the longest run from scrimmage. Tlie defense continued their dominance against the pass, allowing only eight completions for 59 yards. The lone briglit spot in an otherwise dismal day for Tusculum was tlie play of Birdie Dockery. Dockery ran tlie ball 25 times for 205 yards while nursing a broken hand. Coach Steve Patton's troops will play Carson-Nevmian, defeating them 3-1. Heather Hauser led the way with 24 digs and 10 kills. Two days later, GWU knocked off Miu-s Hill 3-0 in front of a crowd of nearly 1,200 people at Paul Porter Arena. Hauser was dominant again with 30 digs and 13 kills. Linette Riiniseur pitched in with 11 kills and 17 digs. Tlie ladies played in the Presbyterian College Tournament on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Tliis was not a successful trip for the ladies as they dropped tliree straight matches for the first time this season, including a 3-1 loss to Presbyterian. PC will enter the SAC Tournament as the second seed, and their recent victory will certainly give the Lady Blue Hose some positive momentum. Tlie conference tournament will probably hold true to form, with GWU and Presbyterian locking up in the finals for the 1997 SAC crown. Tlie Lady Bulldogs are 2-1 against PC this season. A conference title is in sight for the Lady Bulldogs. All they have to do now is win four more home matches in the SAC Tournament to make it happen. the final two games of the season on the road, as tliey will face SAC rivals Pres byterian and Mars Hill. Patton is not taking either team lightly. "We've got two good teams in PC and Mars Hill the next two weeks and they're going to be looking for us," Patton said. Gardner-Webb is now assured of a winning season, marking the first time in school history that a first-year coach has posted a winning record.
