In a game mostly domi nated by defense and big plays, the Running Bulldogs ran over the Chargers 28-10 at Spangler Stadium. Leading 7-0 after half- time, Bulldog junior safety Michael Woods grabbed the first of his three intercep tions by picking off New Haven during the second half s opening drive. Bulldogs QB Jeremy Martin took advantage of the situation by leading GWU down to the Charger 22, where he hooked up with wide receiver Andy Andrews for the touchdown. After New Haven scored early in the third quarter to make it 14-10, the Bulldogs' defense took control, pro ducing four turnovers in the third quarter alone. The three interceptions by Woods tied an NCAA record for most interceptions in a quarter. Taking over after a New Haven punt, Martin once again marched GWU down the field, hitting Willie Buchanant on a short route and then watching him dance past defenders on his way to a 56-yard touchdown. Not content with their lead, Gardner-Webb sealed the victory with a 7-play, 40- yard drive. On 4-18, Martin fired a pass to Toby Steele, ending any hope by New Haven for a comeback. Overall that day Martin threw for 331 yards and three touchdowns, also run ning for a score early in the game. The week before, Gardner-Webb's offense car ried the load as they domi nated Samford 36-17 on the road. Justin Richardson ruled the ground as he ran for 168 yards on 22 carries and Martin completed 17 passes for 213 yards. Gardner-Webb scored first as Jeremy Martin hooked up with Darrin Bradford for a touchdown, igniting an explosive first half for the Bulldogs. Leading 24-3 going into half-time, GWU hit cruise control and put up two more touchdowns in the second half. After an off weekend, the Bulldogs travel to New Hampshire Nov. 11 to face the Wildcats. Shane Kohns Pilot staff The Gardner-Webb men s soccer program is feel ing the effects of the transi tion to Division I competi tion. With just one win thus far in the inaugural season of a D-1 schedule, the young team continues to see each and every game as an oppor tunity for improvement. Trailing 1-0 at Winthrop midway through the second half, the GWU defensive corps, coupled with some questionable calls by the ref eree, gave up goals in the 75th and 81st minute to insure the Bulldogs of their fourth straight loss. There was a bright spot for the Dogs however, as freshman midfielder Charles Lewis notched a late goal off an assist from sophomore Jason Hoffman. This gave both players their first points as Runnin' Bulldogs. The next test for the Dogs will come Nov. 2 in Raleigh versus the Wolfpack of NC State. The Pack, hav ing struggles of their own this, season, are hungry for a win and the young guns of Gardner-Webb will have to step up to meet the chal lenge. The task will be made even more difficult by injuries. Bulldogs Paul McCallum, Sidney Frewen and Juan Martinez are listed as questionable for the match. The team will then come back home to face the Hokies of Virginia Tech on Nov. 4 in the twilight season finale. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. at Spangler Stadium and will be the first night game in the history of the GWU men's soccer pro gram. The game, being billed as “Get Hokie Night,” will give three people an opportu nity to win a Dodge Durango in the Tedder Dodge/Hardee's Halftime Shootout. So, come out and support the Bulldogs as they tackle the Virginia Tech Hokies this Saturday night in Spangler Stadium.
