Page 5 Friday, September 14, 2001 JTiePlTdr Medical help now available on Saturday Erin Boyd Pilot staff Three hours in a hospital emer gency room is not how freshman Nicole Wilkening imagined spending one of her first Saturdays at college. With a sore throat, aching head and limited choice of medical facilities, Wilkening visited Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. “Both my RA and I called around to different places, but no one was open, so I had to go to the emergency room,” said Wilkening. Fortunately for students like Wilkening, Gardner-Webb has recently been working to provide a place where students can get medical attention on Saturdays, when most doctor’s offices are closed. Under the leadership of Residence Life, the University has come under an agreement with CLECO Family Practice in Shelby. CLECO, which stands for Cleveland County, is a medical service combining the forces of several local doctor’s offices. Four medical providers and five nurses work on a rotation basis at the facility. “CLECO provides students with an option to get non-emergency medical attention on the weekends,” said Dean and Director of Residence, Life Doug Searcy. CLECO is opened to walk-ins 8- 9:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. Monday- Friday. Saturday appointments are available for sick patients only. “Their policy had indicated to us that students should call in advance. Based on CLECO’s availability, they will provide an appointment for you,” said Searcy. As it does with the nearby Boiling Springs Medical Associates, Gardner- Webb will pay the first $ 15 of any full time, residential student’s CLECO bill. The student pays the bill’s balance. Searcy states that Boiling Springs Medical Associates, located at 305 W. Despite the proximity of Boiling Springs Medical Associates (BSMA) to the Gardner-Webb campus, some stu dents still feel there should be an on- campus infirmary. “Every other college that I know of has one [an infirmary] except for Gardner-Webb,” said junior Scott Ryan. “I don’t understand why we aren’t meeting the standard that other schools are setting. I think we need to raise the standard,” he said. Searcy explains that Gardner-Webb does not have an on-campus infirmary because of the medical options already available to students in the Boiling Springs area. “We have many options available to us,” said Searcy. “Boiling Springs Medical Associates benefits the insti tute, offers low costs to students, is in a convenient location and administers good medical attention,” he said. Along with CLECO and Boiling Springs Medical Associates, students can receive medical attention at several other area locations. However, under GWU's current student medical policy, the university will only cover the first $15 at BSMA or CLECO. Library adds new technology for students Leigh Harris Pilot saff Over the summer, a num ber of new services were added to the library to offer more con venience to students. A patron self-renewal, a search of course reserves, an Encyclopedia Britannica (EB) online refer ence tool and netLibrary (the newest addition to NC Live) were among the additions. Patrons can reach any of these services by going to WWW. library. gardner-webb. edu or by visiting the Gardner- Webb home page and clicking on the library link. Students are now able to renew books online from home by accessing the library’s main page. If patrons are successful in renewing an item, the new due date of the item will be present ed on the screen. If unsucessful, the reason for denial will be dis played on the screen. Students can renew a circulating item only once and it cannot be renewed if it is overdue. Patrons can also search for books that professors have put on reserve. This can be done by either the class name or the pro fessor’s name. Students can view all of the items on reserve for the class and can determine if a spe cific item is presently in use. Also, if a student forgets the title of a book, he or she can look it up on the online cata logue by accessing the course reserve records for that class. Another addition is an online edition of Encyclopedia Britannica that students can access from on or off-campus. At EB online, students can get a variety of reference sources beyond the encyclopedia itself. There are links to 130,000 web sites from the encyclopedia that you can access by just clicking on the hyperlink. Also, students can benefit from the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary that is available on the site as well. The newest supplement to NC LIVE is netLibrary. NetLibrary permits users to check out online books for two hours at a time. In order to use its services, a student must set up a personal account. The library staff is also try ing to add netLibrary’s contents to the library catalogue so stu dents can go directly from the catalogue to the electronic book at netLibrary. Students can also limit their searches to netLibrary’s electronic titles only. The library has also added a couple of new staff members to help patrons. Mary Roby is the new associate director for the library. Sherry Tsiugham is now the weekend circulation assistant. The library is now conducting a search for a refer ence librarian. Valerie Perry, director of the library, said, “I’m pleased with the new things we were able to imlement into the library. This is always an excit ing time of year.” Current Services Networking • Web Hosting • Web Development • Dial-up Service • Network Wiring • Co-Location Domain Hosting • Dedicated Service We are the only “LOCAL” Internet Service provider in Kings Mountain, NC and surrounding areas.
