board of trustees
has hired three out
side attorneys to perform a
“complete and impartial”
investigation of allegations
brought against the university.
Ed Hallman, H. King
Buttermore III and Monica
Stucky, lawyers from Atlanta,
Ga., have been at the school for
more than a week interviewing
faculty, staff and students.
Hallman would not tell
who recommended him and his
partners for the job. A rumor
circulating around campus was
that Trustee Tom Bell, of
Marietta, Ga., recommended
Hallman. However, Hallman
said he has never heard nor
meet Bell. Bell did not return
phone calls.
Trustee Chairman Thomas
Hardin, who also did not return
phone calls, said in a press
release that Hallman’s job “is
to look into all aspects of the
Gardner-Webb honor code, the
situation in question, including
actions by the president, and
the subsequent unrest on cam
pus.”
The press release also said
that Hallman and his law part
ners have extensive experience
with collegiate honor codes
and student judicial systems.
Hallman said he has done a
lot of work for honor codes at
schools such as Wake Forest
University, Georgia State

Hallman has worked for at
least three other cases for
Gardner-Webb in the past. One
involved accusations the uni

Hallman said he could not dis

the other one.
Hallman stated that he has

Students, faculty

Wayne Earley feels that
prayer is the answer to Gardner-
Webb’s problems.
That’s why the senior
attended a student/faculty
prayer service Wednesday in
the Dover Chapel.
“As a Christian, I felt oblig
ated and responsible to pray for
what has happened with our
university in regards to the pres
ident,” Earley said. “It makes
me feel good that the Father
hears prayers and rejoices in
fulfilling those prayers.”
About seven students and
eight faculty members were
present at the meeting.
The student prayer meeting
was originally supposed to be
around the fiagpole. However,
because of rain, the students
were given permission to join
the faculty prayer meeting at
noon in the chapel.
For the past year, faculty
have met at noon each
Wednesday in the chapel. Tracy
Jessup, minister to the universi
ty, leads the prayer service.
On Wednesday, Jessup
began listing several prayer
requests concerning the univer
sity, faculty and students. The
requests were followed by indi
vidual silence, individual spo
ken prayer and a closing prayer
by Jessup.
“Personally, I feel one rea
son the university is so great is
because of all the prayers
throughout the decades,” Jessup
said. “You should never under
estimate what God can do.”
The meeting lasted about
30 minutes. Jessup said that
from now on, students are wel
come at the weekly faculty
prayer service.
