Page 12 Friday, October 11,2002 Editorial Letters to the editor Poster a different athlete To The Editor: Ironic isn’t it? Two years after he didn’t graduate, the photo of #30 is still on the website banner. It’s time for a change and I have some suggestions such as scholar/ athlete/ graduate Bruce who along with grad assistant James earned over 1000 points on the court. You could feature the Awesome Aussies- Brenden and Tim. How about that incredible shot of Eli by Joy Marinelli? How about promoting the Women’s Soccer Team and their NCCA title? I understand the tennis teams have the highest collective GPA’s. What about our international student athletes who overcome lan guage and culture difficulties to succeed in the classroom and on the playing field? Sylvia, Irene, Natalie, Soyini bring such grace to the track and demonstrate the grace of the Lord. Eric is not only a nationally competitive wrestler who works out to classical music but a great por trait artist. Gabe is our first to com pete in the javelin and throws a mean pot as well. Stephanie, Susan and Allison are talented on the soft ball field and in the classroom. Swimmers like Becky, Katie, Melissa, Sarah, and Meredith make us look good wet or dry. Chris is such a serious silent scholar but on the field he is a 1 OOyard rushing running back. Being redshirted is tough but allows an athlete to concentrate on studies and develop character. Rod will deliver it straight on the mound and in the school. What about the other hardwork ing student athletes that are heroes of 5 a.m. runs and 7 p.m. study halls. How about the "Rudys" who love the game, warm the bench and warm our hearts? Don’t you agree that its time for a new athletic hero? -Susan Carlisle Bell Student appalled by board’s decision To The Editor: I was appalled when I read the headlines of the Shelby Star on Saturday morning, “President stays, Dean’s demoted.” The two men who stood up to the President for his actions were actually punished, and the President got a ‘slap on the hand’ for his actions. Does anybody see anything wrong with this? I can’t believe our board of trustees, which stand for a school that’s sup posed to be based on Christian morals, could punish two good Christian men for doing the right thing and support our president after the actions he committed. I don’t know about the rest of Gardner-Webb, but I am disappoint ed in the board of trustees and I am very proud of Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Williams for trying to uphold the integrity of our school. — Holly Hamrick, senior All letters to the editor should be 300 words or less.
