Page 16 Friday, October 11,2002 JTiePil&r GWU 31, Liberty 21 Team wins first ever Big South match up Mike Shade Pilot sports editor In the team’s first official Big South Conference game, GWU rallied in the end with three unanswered touchdowns to top Liberty University 31-21. GWU was led by halfback Chris Foster’s career day, rush ing for 116 yards on 18 carries. Senior quarterback Jeremy Martin put up another solid day on the field, going 24 of33 for 249 yards, and also ran 9 times for 32 yards and a touchdown. Martin had help from his receiving core, as seven differ ent receivers caught at least two passes, including five by William Andrews for 81 yards, and five from Darin Bradford for 73 yards. It wasn’t pretty for GWU at the start. Liberty’s opening drive was a four-play 79-yard prance that ended with an 11- yard touchdown run. Then after holding the GWU to a field goal on their first possession, the Flames opened its next pos session with a fiea-fiicker that ended 71 yards later in the end zone, giving Liberty a 14-3 advantage. Gardner-Webb responded with a 5:57 drive, going 83 yards in 11 plays, ending with a 15-yard run into the end zone by Foster. They converted the two-point conversion, and GWU went into halftime trail ing 14-11. But Liberty was not done. The Flames forced a Bulldog punt on the first offensive series of the second half and took con trol with a 20-yard passing play that made it again a two posses sion game, taking control 21- 11. On the ensuing kickoff. Liberty special teams came up big and pinned GWU at their own 10-yard line. But GWU would respond. Running back George Pressley’s 37-yard touchdown run capped off an eight-play 90-yard drive, again bringing the Bulldogs within three. After holding the Liberty offense, GWU put up another impres sive drive, going 79 yards in 12 plays to score on a 13-yard run by Martin. The Bulldog defense stepped up after Liberty’s early third quarter score, holding the Flames scoreless for the last 23 minutes of the game. The ‘D’ was led by safety Mario Williams with 11 tackles, and Jason Threat who added six tackles and a sack. Foster scored again with less than a minute to go to seal the victory for the Bulldogs. The win moves GWU to 4- 1 and 1-0 in the Big South. Gardner-Webb continues toward its goal of a Big South Conference Championship against Elon University this Saturday at 6 p.m. in Spangler Stadium. Men’s CC finishes second Mike Shade Pilot Sports Editor The Gardner-Webb men’s cross country team finished in second place in the 6,000 meter danielchapterone/GWU Collegiate Invitational Friday, while the women’s team fin ished third. The men’s team was led by junior Adam Gaske, who came in eighth overall with a time of 20:25, and Chip Carter, who finished ninth at 20:35. Other top GWU runners were senior J onathan Dameron (11 th), Moses ^ Wanypike (13th)_^and Adam Stewart (25th). The women’s team fin ished third, even without the All-America candidate Sylvia Chelimo and three other team runners. Tht* GWU women were paced by sophomore Irene Chemayak who finished 7th overall with a time of 24:10. Senior Petrona McClymont (14th), junior Kathryn Phillips (21 St), sophomore Tamara Stephenson (41st), and junior Andrea Springer (64th) helped round out the Bulldog scoring. South Carolina State is first with a 2.4. BIGSOUTH HONORS: Junior RB Chris Foster earned Big South Offensive Player of the Week honors after his 116-yard performance against Liberty. Foster is averaging 107 yards over his last two games. Freshman CB Justin Macadoo won his second Conference Freshman of the Week after pulling down an interception to go along with two tackles vs. Liberty. UPCOMINGGAMES: How big is Saturday’s home matchup vs. Big South conference foe Elon? Ginormous. This should be a closely con tested game with championship implications. The first home Big South game will be Saturday at 6 p.m. in Spangler Stadium.
