We’ve survived
midterms.
We’ve returned from Fall Break.
Now its time for some fun.
Homecoming began this week
end, with activities taking place dur
ing the prior week.
Dawn Anthony, assistant direc
tor of Alumni and Parent Relations,
is looking forward to the weekend.
"We anticipate a good turnout
and excitement and a lot of fun and
support from the students and the
community,” she said.
This year’s theme, Gardner-
Webb USA: Bulldog Tradition-
American Pride will focus on patrio
tism and honoring American Heroes.
The weekend kicks off with the
annual GWU Homecoming Golf
Tournament at River Bend Golf
Club, followed by a “Coming
Home” tent gathering and social at
Spangler Memorial Stadium.
The Northside/Southside
Powder-Puff Football game will be
at Spangler Memorial Stadium. The

the whole family. The morning
begins with a community service
called, “In Memory and Honor of
American Heroes” at Lake
Hollifield. Guided tours of the cam
pus will be offered throughout the
morning.
The Homecoming Parade will
feature GWU clubs as well as

Saturday evening holds the
“American Tribute” Fireworks
Show, the Alumni Social and the
“Star Spangled” Homecoming

The Gardner-Webb
University board of trustees
announced Thursday that
Frank Campbell will begin
serving as interim president on
Monday, Nov. 4.
Campbell, 65, retired in
June as president of Averett
University, where ne served
for 17 years.
Chairman Tommy Hardin
stated the board “unanimous
ly” supports Campbell, who
will have “full presidential
authority” starting Monday.
Hardin also noted lawyer
Ed Hallman stated Thursday
morning that the university
would no longer need his law
firm’s services.
When asked about the sta
tus of former Dean Gil
Blackburn and former
Associate Dean Phil Williams,
Hardin said “that issue was
taken care of in the Sept. 27
meeting.”
Speculation is that
Campbell will have the power
to name the new deans.
During his time as presi
dent, Averett’s budget
increased tremendously —
from just under $5 million to
$20 million.
The Shelby Star recently
reported that the school grew
academically during
Campbell’s time there, adding
graduate and professional
studies programs and expand
ing graduate degrees to
include a rnaster of business
administration and a master of
arts in teaching.
Faculty at Averett stated
Thursday that Campbell was a
“very personable and fair”
president, who knew and
spoke to many students by
name.
Those who knew him at
Averett also described
Campbell as being a good
mediator, who tried to address
all concerns.
Though from Roanoke,
Va., Campbell holds some ties
with North Carolina. He has a
doctor of divinity from Wake
Forest University.
Campbell also holds a
doctor of ministry, a master of
theology, a bachelor of divini
ty, an honorary doctorate of
philosophy degree and a bach
elor of arts degree.
Throughout his career,
Campbell has been active in
community and religious ser
vice.
Campbell also served as
pastor of five churches across
North Carolina and Tennessee
before becoming president of
Averett.
Campbell and his wife
live in Danville, Va.
The healing
process begins
for Gardner-
Webb.
