BASEBALL: Everyone contributes Baseball from page 1 “No matter how much talent you have, you have to work ais a team to be successful,” said Stycrs. “There’s no superstar on our team. Everybody contributes.” Gonzalez said that the team’s strongest point this season is the combination of good pitching Shd a strong offensive drive. Offensively, the Dogs scored 22 runs in the past three games. “Our hitters are doing a great job of reading pitchers,” said Gonzalez. Defensively, the team has held its opponents to just five runs in their past three games. “All credit goes to the defense,” said pitcher Jeff Long. “By playing so well in the field, they gave me confidence and made my job easy. “All I did was throw strikes,” said Long. “The defense and the bats took care of the rest.” SPORTS IN BRIEF MENS GOLF The Citadel Invitational Pine Forrest Country Club, Charleston, SC 2/25 - Brian Parker’s final round 75 vaulted GWU to a second-place finish in the Citadel Invitational Tuesday. The Bulldogs came up just short of Flagler College, who fin ished the final day with a 308 to nip GWU by two strokes. Leading the Bulldogs individually was Rory McCaughna, whose final round 77 lifted him to fourth overall in the individual competition. Steve McDonald fin ished sixth overall, Parker and Chris Brady finished 15th, and John Easley was 37th for GWU. The second place finish puts the ‘Dogs out to good start, after placing third in the CSU Kickoff Classic February 18-19. Next up is the Winthrop Invitational March 10-11. WOMENS TENNIS Gardner-Webb 7 Morris Brown 0 2/20 - GWU improved its record to 1 -3 last Thursday, easily handling Morris Brown, 7-0. Watford/Gardner (MBC) 8-0 SOFTBALL Seahawk Classic Wilmington 2/23 - Coastal Carolina ended GWU’s run at the UNC- Wilmington Seahawk Classic Sunday, ousting the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 and only allowing one Gardner-Webb hit. Overall, Gardner-Webb came out of the competition successful, with a record of 4-2 on the weekend. After dropping their first game of the tournament to the same Coastal Carolina team, 2-1, the Bulldogs went on to win four in a row. Lani Shaffer went 4-4 to lead the Bulldogs over Hampton in extra innings. GWU then dominated Coppin State, 12-2, dropped UNCW 2-0, and slipped by UMBC 3-2. The tournament moves the Lady Bulldogs to .500 at 6- 6. GWU will next play Thursday at Jacksonville, the team’s first ever Atlantic Sun game. MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER vs. Jacksonville State, Thursday, Feb. 27 SENIOR NIGHT Women start at 6 p.m., Men start at 8 p.m. Swimming Team finishes second at meet John Olson Pilot staff The Gardner-Webb swim mers ended their season at the Southern States Conference meet Feb. 13-15, recording a school record second-place fin ish while setting nine school records and placing five swim- Tiers on the All-Conference team in Radford, Va. The Lady Bulldogs scored 633 points while defending champion the University of North Florida earned 848 team points to earn the title. Senior Cheryl Home ended her GWU career with two victo ries. Her first victory occurred in the 50 free by improving on her school record with a time of 24.06. Home also eamed a vic tory in the 100 free for Gardner- Webb. GWU freshman Taylor Simpson placed second in the 200 fly with a new school record time of 2:08.46. Kourtney Hamilton swam to a pool record time of 2:23.87 in the 200 breast. Freshman Samantha Lehman placed sec ond in the 1650 followed by senior Melissa Smith’s fourth place finish. “It was an awesome meet,” said Smith. “Even though we had two disqualifications we pulled together and fought until the end.” Gardner-Webb’s 400-med- ley team of Katie Thrall, Lisa Fry, Hamilton and Becky Henninger set a school record time of 4:04.26 to finish fourth. GWU’s 400 free relay squad of Henninger, Jennifer Chester, Home, and Jessica Mischel fin ished second. Chester finished second for the Bulldogs in the 500 free. Horne became Gardner- Webb’s first four-time All- Conference swimmer. Hamilton (3rd selection), Chester (2nd selection). Simpson (1st selection) and Lehman (1st' selection) also eamed All-Conference honors. Head Coach Mike Simpson and the lady swimmers finished the season with an 18-6 record, besting the old record by six wins. “I was very proud of our team this year for such a greM performance,” said Horne. “Not just at Southern States, but at our dual meets and invitation- als. We stood strong and did not let losing a meet get us down. “I feel that I ended my long career of swimming on a good note. I thank God for the oppor tunity to swim under such an awesome coach like Mike [Simpson].” Gardner-Webb’s swim team is graduating five seniors this season. The swim team’s first graduating class consists of Kourtney Hamilton, Becky Henninger, Cheryl Home, Hannah Lawrence and Melissa Smith.
