Paged Friday, April 18,2003 Sports JTiePli&r GWU 11, Western Carolina 7 Baseball team wins on road John Olson Pilot staff Gardner-Webb baseball, now 24- 15, earned a win on the road against Western Carolina on Wednesday night before coming home to continue con ference play. Ryan Quirello and Chip Watts led Gardner-Webb with three hits each in the 11-7 win over the Catamounts. The Dogs scored five runs in the first inning off of four hits. Quirello scored off of a left field single by Watts in the third for GWU. Gardner-Webb’s defensive power prevented the Catamounts from scor ing until the fourth when Western Carolina brought in four runs to come within two points of the visiting Bulldogs. Jon David Milford’s single to center field in the fifth inning brought Jim Glueckert home to advance on the lead, 7-4. Jonathan McKoy scored after a single up the middle by teammate David Futrelle in the sixth inning. Quirello batted in two for Gardner- Webb after a single up the middle. Futrelle scored off of a RBI single by Ryan McGirr, giving the Dogs an 11-4 lead. The Catamounts finalized the score, 11 -7 with three runs off of two hits in the eighth. Zach Ward’s pair of strikeouts prevented the Catamounts from scoring in the final inning. Abe Gonzalez (3-3) captured the win on the mound for Gardner-Webb. Gonzalez allowed seven hits, five runs, three walks, and seven strikeouts after seven innings of work. Seth Foster (2-3) took the loss for Western Carolina after pitching 4.1 innings and giving up eight hits and seven runs. Sam Bradford, Quirello, Sammy Styers and Watts scored twice for Gardner-Webb at Childress Field in Cullowhee. Rod Goldston led the Catamounts with three hits after four times at bat. Alan Beck, Todd Buchanan, and Goldston came across home plate twice for Western Carolina. Gardner-Webb takes on confer ence opponent Troy State on Friday at home with the first pitch thrown at 3 p.m. The Trojans and Bulldogs contin ue on Saturday in a doubleheader. Game one of the doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. in Boiling Springs. Tennis Teams fall in first round MEN’S Gardner-Webb fell to sixth-seeded Campbell, 4-1, in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Tennis Championships at Stetson University on Wednesday. Photo by Angela Muitlff Sprinting toward conference Gardner-Webb’s track & field squad entered the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships on April 17 with confidence after posting 14 individual wins at home on April 5. The conference championship, hosted by The University of Central Florida, is taking place in Orlando, Fla. Day one of the championships includes the women’s hammer throw, the men’s pole vault and both men’s and women’s 10,000-meter competi tions. Day two includes both male and female 5000-meter races, women’s pole vault and the 4x100- meter relays. The meet concludes on April 18 with the men’s and women’s 4x400- meter relays. The track & field mem bers are aiming to achieve solid per formances at the conference champi onships in order to set personal goals and to continue the season at the. regional and national level. — John Olson *see next edition for final results of track and field conference results
