Tuesday, September 2,2003tL i> d Sports Page 11if Season starts with a win Photo by Lm Adams Senior William Andrews is pulled down in a game against Clark-Atlanta University. Gardner-Webb won their first home game 45-0. Win from page 1 Atlanta to only 21 first-quarter yards on 13 plays. The second quarter was much calmer as GWU was allowed only a 30-yard field goal by freshman Hunter' Smith. Again the Bulldog defense would not allow Clark-Atlanta to get any thing going in their option offense. The Panthers offense was held to just 87 first half yards. The second half started out much like the first, with the Bulldogs having their way with the Panther defense. Roberts found his way into the end zone on a five-yard scamper to push the lead to 29-0 with 10:48 left in the third. Moments later, Tavoris Horton got to Clark- Atlanta's punter and brought him down in the end zone for a safety and a 31-0 lead. Another short scoring drive was ended when fresh man Lome Hicks danced his way to the end zone from two yards out. The touch down would be the last points scored by either team as the final score, 45-0, was decided with 1:16 left on the clock in the third quarter. As a team the defense tallied nine tackles for a loss and three quarterback sacks. With the lead, a number of Bulldog defenders saw action as pre-season All- Americans Jim Maxwell (nine tackles) and Mario Williams (seven tackles, fumble recovery) saw limit ed playing time. "The defense did what they had to do," said Head Coach Steve Patton, "Shut down the option." The Bulldogs finished the game with 363 total yards and put points on the board each of the seven times they were in the red zone. Clark was held to just 135 yards on 63 plays. "We just had better team speed and depth, and more scholarships to give, which showed tonight," said Patton. Andrews caught eight passes for 100 yards on th&- season opener. He now has 166 receptions for 2,274 yards and 24 touchdowns in his four years at GWU. Andrews needs only 23 receptions to move into first place on the career-receiving list at GWU. GWU will be back in action on Saturday as it trav els to Bozeman, Mont. to face the No. 15 ranked Montana State. "We will .go in with the attitude that if we play hard, we have a chance to win," said Patton.
