Pa&e 8 Tuesday, September 16. 2003 Sports GWU sweeps opener John Olson Pilot Sports Editor Gardner-Webb volleyball (5-7) swept the Savannah State Tigers in their home- opener match at the Lutz- Yelton Convocation Center on Thursday. First year Head Coach Cole “Tallman's Lady Bulldogs won the match in three games (30-10, 30-17, 30- 19). In game one, Savannah State held „ . , , GWU to an 8-6 lead before Brinkley the Bulldogs earned 22 of the next 26 points to win 30-10. GWU tal lied 18 kills and a team attack percentage of .441 in game one. In game two, the Bulldogs started with a strong 10-1 lead. The 30-17 score of game two gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 match lead over the Tigers. The 'Dogs third and final score of the evening (30-19) gave GWU the match title. Three freshmen, Jenna McNeely, Melissa Gibson and Tuesdie Lisenby col lected their first collegiate kills during game three. Tallman brought in six freshman ath letes this fall. The freshmen are Melissa Budde, Maggie Cornwall, Gibson, Lisenby, McNeely and Nicci Stephens. “The returnees worked hard in the spring and set the standard for the freshman to pull together to work hard,” said senior captain Kristie Brinkley. Brinkley had 19 kills with a .562 percent attack against Savannah State. “We know exactly what we are doing when,” said Brinkley. “He (Tallman) knows the game of volleyball.” The other seniors on the team are Sara Alford and Laura Murfee. Following a win in their home opener on Thursday, GWU traveled to Greensboro to compete in the NC A&T Classic on Friday and Saturday. GWU started off the Classic with a win on Friday morning over Savannah State, 3- Oand took a 0-3 loss to High Point in their second match on Friday. On Saturday the team took losses to NC A&T (0-3) and Marshall (0-3). “I am not satisfied by any means (about the team's performance over the week end),” said Brinkley. Next up the for the volleyball team is a road game against the Winthrop Eagles on Sept. 16 in Rock Hill, S.C. Tallman's squad of 15 returns home on Sept. 27 to take on Jacksonville State University at 5 p.m. “Gardner-Webb Volleyball is currently prevailing through a demanding tourna ment schedule each weekend to prepare us for the conference tournament at the end of the season,” said Tallman. Kristie Brinkley earned All- Tournament honors at the Aggie Classic. SPORTS IN BRIEF Women's soccer earns first win of season On Sunday, the Lady Bulldogs soccer team (1-3-0) earned their first win of the season, 1-0 against UNC Wilmington. Sophomore Leeanna Woodworth scored the lone goal, giving GWU the victory. Woodworth's goal, her second of the season, was assisted by forward Liz Kier. The shutout for the Lady Bulldogs was also the season’s first for senior keeper Hilary George, who has 12.1 career shutouts. Prior to the win in Wilmington, the Lady Bulldogs lost 0-3 to Davidson on Sept. 12 on the road. George had a season-high nine saves against Davidson, yet the Wildcats prevailed to improve their record to 3- 3-0. Both Woodworth and Lindsey Gladhill led the Lady Bulldogs with four shots each against Davidson. Gardner-Webb takes on Winthrop at 4 p.m. Wednesday at home in an attempt to start their first winning streak of the season. — Jared Smith Football wins against Webber International The Gardner-Webb football team (2-1) gave a 52-10 beating to Webber International University on Saturday at Spangler Stadium. Quarterback Nick Roberts completed 18 of 22 passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns. The GWU defense held Webber to 165 total yards in 57 plays and three points on offense as the team's only touchdown came on a 45-yard fumble return. The Warriors managed to rush for 43 yards on 27 carries against a punishing.GWU defense, which allowed only seven first downs through out the game. The GWU offense had an impressive night as well, racking up 422 yards of total offense. Wide-receiver William Andrews finished with nine catches for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns, only eight catches shy of the receiving record at GWU. Andrews has 181 receptions for 2,468 yards and 26 touchdowns in 32 career games. GWU will have a test as Chattanooga from the Southern Conference comes to Spangler Stadium on Saturday, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. — Sean Hubbard Men’s soccer defeated by Winthrop Jacob Conley Pilot Staff There were two athletic events on Gardner-Webb’s campus this Saturday. While the Runnin' Bulldogs football team was taking the field against Webber International University, the men's soccer team was leaving another field of play after a 6-0 loss to the Winthrop Eagles. The Bulldogs (1-2-0) were overmatched by the defending Big South Champs (4-0-1). “Winthrop is a quality team, that’s why they were the Big South champions last year,” said Tony Setzer, GWU men’s head soccer coach. Winthrop’s Lloyd Afriyie knocked in a goal from close range to open the scoring in the seventh minute of the first half The second goal of the day came only seven and a half minutes later as Donald MacGregor increased Winthrop’s lead to two goals. Michael Chumah scord the final goal of the first half in the 36th minute. The Runnin’ Bulldogs came out the second half on a much different note, shooting six shots during the first 16 minutes of the period. GWU, allowing nine shots in the first half, did not allow Winthrop to get off a single shot for the first 16 minutes of the second frame. Winthrop’s scoring began the second half in the 65th minute when Dee Vydra scored on an assist from Michael Chumah. Vali Amason added to the Eagles’ lead, scoring in the 80th minute of the contest. Chumah com pleted the scoring when he made an unassisted goal just two minutes before the end of regulation. In spite of the final score, there were many positives for the Bulldogs in the game against Winthrop. GWU out- shot the Eagles for the game, 21-15. The Bulldogs had nine comer kick opportunities com pared to Winthrop’s five. Junior Damell Carroll led GWU with five shots against Winthrop. Several GWU play ers saw their first collegiate action during the game, includ ing goal-keeper Joe Johnson, who recorded one save, and freshman Jonathan Black. Senior Matt Bledsoe and Charlie Gonzalez played in their first game of the season. Fans will have the opportunity to see GWU in action again at home on Saturday, Sept. 20 in a Big South Conference match-up against Liberty University at 2 to Elon University on p.m.
