Page 2 Friday,'January 23, 2004 .The I News Unity service brings people together Jared Smith Pilot Staff Gardner-Webb University Provost Dr. Frank Bonner welcomed guests to a Racial Unity ser vice that was held at 7p.m. on Sunday in Paul Porter Arena. The service was par tially geared toward the recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. and includ ed a video of speeches by King. During the service, there were congregational songs in the beginning of the evening led by Andy Roby of Shelby First Baptist, and congregational singing led by Ray Harper of Shiloh Baptist later on. Also taking place were activities such as a drama by the Webb Spinners of GWU, a medley by the Mass Choir led by Molora Kellstrom of the Family Worship Center, a message shared by Robert Smith from Beeson Divinity School in Alabama who also spoke at Dimensions on Tuesday, and candle lighting initiated by Carroll Page of Boiling Springs Baptist. Following the ser vice was a reception, and held on Monday at 11:30 a.m. a walk from the Law Enforcement Center to Shelby high school, and then at 12:00 p.m. a Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration was held at Malcolm Brown Auditorium at Shelby high Celebration Week Relevant message through music and ministry Amanda Wood Rijct staff Gardner-Webb University’s annual stu- dent-led revival, Celebration Week, will begin at 8 p.m. Monday in Dover Theater. The revival, a long standing tradition at GWU, invites students to partici pate in worship through preaching, music and testi monies. The revival will con tinue through Jan. 29, fea turing an extra Dimensions service Thursda:y morning and nightly services held in Dover Theatre. Speakers for the week include Roland Kilmilkai, Monday night; Brandon Juhaish, Tuesday morning; Cara Madoni, Tuesday night; Rebecca Miller, Wednesday night; Rich Williams, Thursday morn ing; and Matthew Orth, of Crossroad’s Ministries, at the last service Thursday night. The Gospel Choir will be performing Tuesday morning in Dimensions, and special bands will be performing throughout the week, including Circle 425, Brother Esau and The Verge Band. ; GWU professors will also be participating in the revival by reading Scripture passages, and praying. According to Amy Corriher, publicity and church relations coordina tor for Campus Ministries United, Celebration Week is the collaborative effort of all those involved with CMU, headed up by Director of Student Ministries Andy Byers. "It’s a corporate effort," Corriher said. "All of us are helping to put it on. Corriher said she is looking forward to the revival and feels that the speakers will relate to other GWU students. "It’s very relevant to hear people your own age talk about things you’re dealing with," she said. school. T upcoming events i I During the first week of February, Gardner-Webb students will have the oppor tunity to' go bowling and attend an ice cream social. These events, along with many others, are held as part of GWU’s Deaf Awareness Week, allowing hearing stu dents to gain exposure to the deaf community. According to Josh Goode, a disability specialist for the Noel Program, Deaf Awareness Week also pro vides "a time for everybody to get together in a stressless situation." One of the main events of the week will be a perfor mance by the Gardner-Webb sign choir at 7 p.nl. Feb. 5, in the LYCC.
