The NCAA made an
example out of Gardner-
Webb University Thursday
afternoon.
After 18 months of
investigation, the NCAA
made public their final
report concerning athletic
violations. The university
was‘placed on three years
probation for lack of institu
tional control.
“The committee found
that many of the violations
were directly attributable to
the institution being ill-pre
pared for a move to Division
I and the accompanying
complex requirements of
Division I membership,”
read the report.
The release also said
that, “this case should serve
as a warning to institutions
making the move to
Division I that there must be
a heightened sense of aware
ness with respect to compli
ance during the period of
transition and such institu
tions need to take deliberate
steps to prepare for the ele
vation to Division I status.”
Overall, the NCAA
infractions committee dis
covered five major viola
tions and one secondary vio
lation committed by GWU.
During a press confer
ence with the media
Thursday afternoon, infrac
tions committee chairman
Thomas Yeager named the
two main topics of the
investigation as the lack of
control of the institution and
the former president provid
ing extra benefits for student
athletes.
Other violations includ

• During the 2001-01
academic year to the 02-03
year, several student athletes
in four sports (baseball,
men’s basketball, women’s
cross country and women’s
track) practiced and compet
ed and received athletically
financial aid while ineligi
ble.
• During 1999-00 until

wrestling team had two
matches last week to finish
off the regular season for the
Bulldogs (6-20).
On Tuesday night the
Bulldogs faced no.33 the
Citadel for the last home
match of the season.
The match was close the
whole way, especially when
senior Erik Wince stepped
out for his match on senior
day. Wince was paired up
against nationally ranked
Keith Clifton (no. 15), while
pinning the opposing team’s
wrestler in just one minute

Following Wince’s vic

Brandon Beach sealed the
10-5 decision in the 184-

Bulldogs to 17-15. Despite
the effort of the GWU
wrestlers, the come back
was stopped when the
Citadel took the next two
wins to secure the match.
The Bulldogs battled
Duke during their last regu

Devils wound up pulling
away with a 25-12 win over
GWU. Wrestlers Wince,
Justin Lansley, Daniel Elliot

matches against the Blue
