Friday, March 5, 2004 Paae 12 Sports Track concludes indoor season at Clemson Classic John Olson Sports Editor Gardner-Webb’s track and field teams concluded the indoor season Feb. 28 in day two of the Clemson Classic. Margo Robinson led the way for the women’s team Saturday with a second place finishing time of 25.33 m the 200-meter dash, a sea son best by 18-hundredths of a second. Georgia State’s Zanta Marble out sprinted Robinson for the win in 24.94 seconds. Robinson placed second in the women’s long jump after leaping a distance of 18-10. Robinson holds the Lady Bulldogs indoor school record of 20-04.25 in the long jump. “I was pretty content with what I did,” said Robinson. Tamara Stephenson led the way for the Lady Bulldogs in the two-lap 400- meter race with a sixth place showing. Stephenson Robinson crossed the line in 58.63, a season best. C a r 1 e n e McLean came across the line next for GWU two spots behind Stephenson with a 59.71 showing. Anne Normand placed fifth in the shot put with a best heave of 40-09. Normand set a school record of 42-08.00 on Jan. 23 at the Niswonger Invitational. Lindsey Sutherland compet ed in both the shot put and weight throw Saturday. Sutherland finished fifth in the weight throw and sev enth in the shot put. Sutherland captured the 2003 Atlantic Sun Conference shot put title. Twin sisters Michele Milner (8th) and Marcie Milner (12th) represented GWU in the women’s seed ed section of the 3,000- meters. Michele Milner holds GWU's second fastest 3,000 indoor time of 10:43.93, set at the East Tennessee State Invitational on Jan. 24. “My first indoor season was a learning experience,” said Michele Milner. “I learned a lot of different race tactics and what works for me and what doesn’t.” In day one of the meet senior Chip Carter captured the men’s mile title with a season best time of 4:27.67. “I could tell early on in the race that it was going to be between me and the guy (Mike McGuire) from West Georgia,” said Carter. “We kept switching off the lead. I was scared to kick too early and not be able to hang on, so I waited until the last lap and made my move. Fortunately, he was more tired than I expected, and he couldn't hang on." Senior Amanda Hofacker led the women with a top three showing in the 3,000-meter event on Friday. Hofacker set a sea son best of 11:23 in the 15- lap event. Adam Gaske rounded out the top three in Friday’s 3,000 with a season “We are looking to be A- Sun Conference Champions. ” -Margo Robinson best finishing time of 9:00.16. Kevin Prime missed the bronze in the 200 meters by one spot after crossing the line in 22.46 seconds. Prirne rounded out the top seven in the 60-meter event with a 6.93 finishing time. Peter Augusta set a season best of 23.67 in the men’s 200 event. Augusta also set a new season best of 7.33 in the 60-meter event. Aaron Sykes rounded out GWU’s trio of runners in the 60 with a 7.46 showing. Darryl Nelson placed fourth overall in the men’s weight throw with a best heave of 36-06. Nelson is in his first year of collegiate track and field and holds the team’s season best weight throw distance of 39-03.25. GWU begins the out door season from March 18- 20 at the Charlotte Relays. “I am looking forward to the outdoor season because I will get to do some longer races and attempt the steeplechase,” said Michele Milner. The women’s team fin ished second at the 2003 Atlantic Sun Track and Field Championships. The Lady Bulldogs led after 17 events prior to defending champion UCF captured its fourth- straight championship. The 2004 A-Sun Championships is set for April 16-17 in Orlando, Fla. The men finished fourth at the meet. "For outdoor, we just want to be competitive with those folks we know we can run with,” said Carter. “We want to be right up there with the best in our confer ence. ti Basketball wins over FAU Sean Hubbard Design Editor The Gardner-Webb University men’s basketball team finished their season with a road win at Florida Atlantic University, 67-65 on Feb. 28. Sophomore Brian Bender led the Bulldogs, tallying 17 points and pulling down nine rebounds to help GWU hold on to it’s ninth win of the sea son. The entire first half was close with neither team able to pull away with more than an eight-point lead. The score was knotted at 36 after the first 20 minutes of play. A FAU lay up gave the Owls a two-point lead, which would be their last of the game. Playing in his last col legiate game, senior Chris Wiggins answered the call with a three to put GWU up for good, 39-38. The Bulldogs continued to build onto their lead the remainder of the game, going up by as many as 15 points with nine minutes left in the game. FAU closed the lead down to five with just over a minute, then down to two, 67-65, with 47 seconds left. After a missed three-point attempt by GWU, the Owls had one more chance to tie or win the game with a trey. A buzzer-beating attempt from the floor came off the rim and ended the hopes of victory for FAU. GWU (9-20,6-14A-Sun) will be eligible for the con ference tournament for the first time next season. The Bulldogs finished the season tied for eighth in the confer ence with FAU. The Owls took the last seed in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament that is scheduled to take place in Nashville, Tenn. The four senior Bulldogs, Wiggins, Tim Behrendorff, Robert Shivers and Brendan dowry helped claim 59 wins over their four-year stint at GWU.
