The Pilot Thursday. February 25. 2010 Page A3 Sports Lady Dawgs still oif a rSlI, despite setback by Diana Palka Pilot Editor Monique Hudson is out for the season with a broken finger and the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t miss her more. The Moe-less Lady Dawgs struggled to defeat the Presbyterian Blue Hose 53-50 in overtime Saturday afternoon. The sloppy victory boosted the team’s re cord to 23-3, tying the record for most wins in a single season, set in 1989-90. The win also improved the Lady Bulldogs’ winning streak to 11. The first half was like a bad joke. With 4:36 to go, the Lady Dawgs were down 23-14, an inexcusable nine-point deficit that left the crowd wondering where the team was who de livered a 41-point trouncing to PC earlier this season. By halftime, the Lady Bulldogs gained par tial redemption, cutting the dominating Blue Hose lead to 23-20. In the second half, the Blue Hose came out strong, capitalizing on a corner-three by guard Amanda Mills, bringing their lead to 34-25 with 13:27 to go in the game. GWU bounced back with a 12-0 run, topped off with Court ney Epps’ three-point play, giving the Lady Dawg’s the go-ahead at 37-34. With just 4:02 left in the game, another three-pointer by sharp shooting Mills brought the Blue Hose ahead 41-39. PC’s Shonda Burnside hit two free throws with 1:26 left in regulation to put increase the Blue Hose lead to 43-39. GWU senior Margaret Roundtree then stepped up and laid in a basket with 1:19 to go and Epps’ made two easy baskets from the line with 11 seconds left, tying the game at 43-43 and inevitably sending it into overtime. It was in the five-minute overtime that the Lady Dawgs showed their true colors. Epps’ fast-break lay up with 2:54 gave the home team the lead and they never relented, win ning 53-50. Epps’ effort led the team with a game-high 19 points with Roundtree chipping in 11 points and seven boards. Junior guard, Dominique Hudson contributed 8 points and 3 steals. Note: The Lady Bulldogs defeated Win- throp 57-39 on Monday to set a new school record for wins in a season with 24. The game was not completed in time for a full summery in The Pilot. The Lady’s will play at home on Saturday against Charleston Southern, the last home game of the year for the Dawgs. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. Men’s basketball affecting NBA draft? Dawgs continue to plummet by Andrew Veeder Pilot Sports Editor Gardner-Webb men’s basketball has indirectly affected this year’s upcpming NBA draft. Just hear me out here folk^. In 2007, GWU made headlines by beating the national basketball pow erhouse Kentucky, 84-68. The 2007 season proved to be a difficult one for the Wildcats, especially with the head coaching troubles of Billy Gil- lispie. The upset proved to be the new coach’s second game, which started the collapse of Kentucky. The loss was the first of many and inevitably leading to the firing of Gillispie. Enter John .Calipari, the former coach of Memphis University. Calipari, of course, got the job at Kentucky. With the help of his star freshman, John Wall, Calipari and the Wildcats are now ranked sec^d in the nation with an impressiv^fc- 1 record. Wall, hailing from Raleigh, is al ready one of the top NBA draft pros pects. Like most in his place. Wall will probably forego the rest of his collegiate campaign to test the wa ters of the NBA. Most draft experts have Wall going number one overall no matter when he declares. So let’s recap. GWU upsets Kentucky. Setting off a rapid chain of events, as fol lows: Gillispie-fired and replaced by Calipari. Calipari recruits superstar Wall, who will (sooner or later) go to the NBA. Therefore, GWU’s up set is the reason that the rookie Wall is such a key component to UK’s team. Yeah? Am I right or am I right? by Blake DuDonis Pilot Ed^r in Chief Ext^Rtng what is proving to be the worst season in years, the Gardner-Webb men’s basketball team fell yet again at home, this time to Elon by a score of 84- 79. The loss is the sixth straight at home and twentieth overall. Coming in with an identical record of 7-19, the Phoenix of Elon appeared to be a good match for the Dawgs. Once the teams took the court, that theory stood up. Although down 36-27 at halftime, Gardner-Webb refused to go away, hit ting 10 three-pointers on the night to keep things close. Several of those threes came in the final three minutes of the game," a time in which Elon seemed to have things wrapped up before the Dawgs went on their scoring barrage. Senior Grayson Flittner hit one of those threes fi"om eight feet behind the arc, sending the crowd at Paul Porter Are na into a frenzy. The team had a chance to bring the game within two until an unadvised three point shot gave momentum back to Elon. The Dawgs continued to foul Elon to extend the game but Elon junior Chris Long came up big, hitting 14-of-17 free throws to keep his team in front. Flittner had 18 points in his last home game as a Bulldog, as senior Anton Silver led the team with 21. Brandon Jackson had nine assists and Josh Henley snagged 11 rebounds. The loss brings the Dawgs to 7-20 on the year, with three of those seven wins coming against D3 or NAIA schools. Gardner-Webb will travel to Presbyte rian on Tuesday before wrapping up their season on the road at UNC-Asheville on Saturday. AttentionfSifmmer 2010 Online Students!
