Page A2 The Pilot News Sizing up ‘Big Brother 2014’ by Diana Palka Pilot Editor I spent the first half of my Saturday night in Do ver Theater watching “Big Brother 2014.” I spent the second half frantically deleting my Facebook, researching conspiracies related to Google and trying to change the political affiliation on my voter registration to Republican. I took a vow of purity, promising never to watch CNN or MSNBC homepage. Sunday morning, I rose with the sun to repent for voting for Barack Obama and personally apologized to my parents for inadvertently being in favor of so cialism. Perhaps the most right-wing production of all- time, Big Brother 2014 made an overt attempt to bring the threat of totalitarianism to the viewers’ at tention. And it did. Maybe it was over my head. Maybe I don’t know enough about theater to fully appreciate true master pieces. But how many of the viewers do? The plot was a bit confusing and at times, and the dialogue seemed to ramble on incessantly. The play is about a totalitarian future for the American people, oppressed by their own government, and the main dominating character (who, by the way, was sexually ambiguous) is Russian? Inexplicable. ^ My mind was inundated with the threat of a very plausible future and was not once offered a solu tion. But the ending was pretty cool. ever again and immediately set FoxNews.com as my ‘“Shutter Island’ is intense, gripping, dark, and unforgettable.” Richard Roeper by Andrew Veeder Pilot Sports Editor Leonardo DiCaprio latest blockbuster hit, “Shut ter Island,” has been a huge success at the box of fice, grossing more than $75 million. This psycho logical thriller, directed by legend Martin Scorsese, has scared audiences across the country for the last few weeks. DiCaprio and his partner, both U.S. Marshalls, are given the task to investigate the disappearanc es of a woman gone missing from Shutter Island, a hospital “for the criminally insane,” according to the International Movie Database’s website. As a fan of scary and “edge-of-your-seat” mov ies, I was more than excited to see this movie. Along with the excellent writing, twists and turns were ever present, with an ending that will be talked about like Bruce Willis’ role in “The Sixth Sense,” At the end of the movie, however, I hadn’t even realized that I had bitten my fingernails down to the skin! This intense movie will have you walking out of the theater replaying every detail to try and grasp the complexity. I highly recommend this movie to thrill-seeking movie goers like myself who enjoy an intense, well-written suspenseful movie like this one. Fans and critics alike are raving about Shutter Island, some even comparing Scorsese to another film legend, Alfred Hitchcock. ‘Shutter Island’ maintains a degree of tension and suspense akin to the best films of Alfred Hitch cock,” said Moises Chiullan of Hollywood Else where. Peter Travers of the Rolling Stones agrees that the famous director’s latest movies have been mas terpieces. “Martin Scorsese making movies as if his life depends on it, never skimping on ferocity and feel ing,” Travers wrote. “From ‘Mean Streets’ to ‘The Departed’, Scorsese’s crime films turn the genre on its empty head, shaking out the cliches to uncover the violence of the mind. His latest, ‘Shutter Island,’ sizzles with so much nerve-frying suspense that it’s hot to the touch.” The Pilot Blake DuDonis Editor-in-Chief GardriBFmfebb T T • *i_ Diana Palka Univ6rsitv Editor V_yX LX ?
