GWU hosts world-renowned Carolina Brass

The 2010 Gardner-Webb Brass Fest
will be featuring the world-renowned Car
olina Brass ensemble on Saturday, April
17. Bragsfest is aimed toward the musical
education of student brass players and the
entertainment of the surrounding commu
nities. The Brassfest also offers continuing
education credit for music teachers and pro
fessionals. Carolina Brass will perform as
well as conduct a clinical musical confer
ence. The Grand-Finale Concert of Carolina
Brass will be held in Dover Theater at 7:30
p.m.
The mission of Carolina Brass is to
promote the understanding of music and
to improve the performance level of musi
cians of all ages. Carolina Brass performs
a wide variety of music including classical
and contemporary works, pops programs
encompassing Broadway, Jazz, and other
popular forms. For this concert, they will
time periods, as well as a World Premiere of
a Michael Jackson Medley, arranged by Dr.
Jeff Richmond, Director of Athletic Bands.
They will also play broadway hits such as
Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story,
blues such as Saint Louis Blues, jazz such
as That’s a Plenty and Summertime, Caro
lina in the Morning, and a World Premiere
of Fanfare and Fugue by Stanley Hoffman.
Carolina Brass consists of a traditional brass
quintet plus a percussionist, world famous
John R. Beck.
As a national touring ensemble and
Summit Recording Artist, Carolina Brass
has quickly become the premiere brass en
semble of the southeast, raising the bar for
music performance and education in Amer
ica. Carolina Brass is a group of dedicated
professionals with a commitment to excel
lence in performance and music education.

and international perfonning, recording and

perform great classical brass music from all performers who mix humor and showman
ship along with great musicianship, and I

Thirty-six Gardner-Webb students re
ceived the Who’s Who Among Students in
American Universities and Colleges this
month, according to Vickie Webb Morri
son.
“The purpose of the program is to recog
nize student campus leaders for achievement
in at least three areas: quality and integrity in
their personal lives, scholastic achievement,
and community involvement,” Webb-Mor-
rison said.
Undergraduate seniors (with 90 or more
hours) were voted on by faculty, administra
tive staff and other senior students. More
than 2,000 other colleges and universities in
all 50 states, the District of Columbia and
several foreign countries participate in this
process, according to Webb-Morrison.
The students receiving the award for
2009-2010 were Spencer Blevins, Anna Bo-
