Georgia Southern baseball
program cuts four after incident
“Unspecified” infraction also brings twelve suspensions
Associated Press
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia
Southern baseball team has dismissed four
players, including its leading hitter, for an
unspecified rules infraction and said 12
others would face suspensions of four
games each.
Second baseman Jody Pollock, third
baseman Ryan Peterson, outfielder Scott
Burks and pitcher Rhett Roberts were all
released from the team on Tuesday.
Pollock, a senior, was the team’s lead
ing returning hitter. He finished last year
with a .387 batting average, 11 home runs
and 83 RBIs.
Both Peterson, also a senior who hit
.284 with one homer and 29 RBI, and Pol
lock started all 58 games for the Eagles
last year.
Burks, a junior reserve outfielder, saw
little action in 1999, appearing in 14
games and appearing four times at the
plate, with no hits and one run scored.
Roberts, a sophomore, also had a sparing
role in 1999, with only four appearances
and a 12.27 ERA.
A news release from the school said
several players were involved in a similar
incident during the 1998 season and were
issued a departmental reprimand at the
time which outlined the potential sever
ity of future penalties.
